Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes: No Room For David Hayter?

Konami Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes Ground Zero Big Boss David Hayter PS3 Xbox 360

PAX has just begun and we've already seen some gameplay for Kojima's next big sequel in the MGS series, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. But like any new reveal, we're often left with a huge pile of questions and absolutely no answers what-so-ever.

But I think I've realized something horrible. Something I never imagined happening to the Metal Gear Solid franchise. I don't think David Hayter will reprise his role as Big Boss. Now I'm not just saying this to stir up trouble; I've actually got a few reasons to think this. And you might just agree with me when you're done reading.

Before we begin, there will be spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4 below this point. You've been warned!

In Metal Gear Solid 4 you play as Solid Snake after his body has been ravaged by accelerated aging. At this point he's still voiced by David Hayter, and all is well in the world until we reach the end of the game when it is revealed that Big Boss is in fact still alive. So now we have two characters who have both reached their twilight years and are both voiced by David Hayter.

Instead of making things weirder than they already were by having David Hayter talk to himself, the people at Konami decided to cast a new voice actor for Big Boss. That man was none other than Richard Doyle (O'Doyle rules!). This matters for two very obvious reasons.

He certainly isn't getting any younger

First of all, the voice had been cast for a reason. We needed something more distinct than an eye patch to tell the difference between the two Snakes. If it was just old David Hayter talking to slightly older David Hayter things would have ended up being very confusing for some people.

So the voice is the clear indicator between the two old Snakes. While it is entirely possible to go back to David Hayter to play another Old Snake, (that will eventually meet a young Snake. I'll get to that in a bit) they'll just be setting themselves up for some real trouble and here's why.

By this point in Big Boss's life, his cloned children are probably preparing for his downfall. It is the end we all know is coming for him. Why does this matter? The same reason Big Boss needed a new voice actor in Metal Gear Solid 4. At some point in the story he will be coming into contact with Solid Snake.

It might not even happen in Ground Zeroes. It could be pushed back into Metal Gear Solid 5, but the point is it will happen. The way I look at it, Konami has a few choices. They can give the part of Big Boss to Richard Doyle throughout the next two MGS games to prepare us for David Hayter as young Solid Snake so there will be a difference in the voices.

Your hair will never be this luxurious. I'm sorry.

The part can be given to David Hayter in Ground Zeroes and suddenly replaced with Richard Doyle in MGS 5 to give the two characters differing voices (A bad idea in my opinion). There's also the chance David Hayter could end up voicing both of them. Or Konami can go for the danger play and cast David Hayter as old Big Boss and give the part of young Solid Snake to someone new.

While I hate the danger play, it actually makes the most sense to me. David Hayter is getting older and its been getting more and more difficult for him to do the young Snake voice. While we all already know he can do the Old Snake voice, one has to wonder if he can still pull off a younger version without straining himself, or if he would even want to.

Whatever happens, something has got to give somewhere. Whichever character he ends up voicing (it could both) I hope he does a great job as usual. How do you feel about these possible problems arising with Snake's voice? Who do you think should be given the role? Why not post in the comments below? As always, thanks for reading.

Honestly, I'm not too worried about Richard O'Doyle taking over for David Hayter if it does happen, but David Hayter does love the role of Snake. If you go back and play the original MGS, his early Snake voice is like his older Snake voice, just without being as grizzly, so he may be able to pull it off.

But let's be honest, it's going to be Nolan North, since he's in every game ever.
I'm pretty sure Nolan North actually voiced a few guards in MGS4 as well.

I'm pretty sure Nolan North actually voiced a few guards in MGS4 as well.

And you'd be right about that.
you are wrong, you are wrong!!!!!!!

i dont belive you get it, without David Hayter voicing Snake - it wouldnt be Snake - it would be a suicidal move on kojima's part - the fans wouldnt accept it and it would hurt sales.

the timeline/storyline of mgs is very confusing (very easy to get lost since it is such a mess and full of errors at this point).

big boss was born between 1935 thats the taken dob. solid snake was born in 1972, outher heaven i.e. mg1 was set in 1995 (solid snakes first foxhound mission at the age of 23)
big boss retired from field duty in 1988 and then set up outher heaven so ground zeros is defo before that - so big boss is defo under 60.

in the video that was released - in the cut scene paz, chico and motherbase (from peace walker 1974) are mentioned so ground zeros frollows on from that.

- on further review of the vid - it seems to be set wright after Peace Walker
Chico was a young boy in Peace Walker 1974. if you pay attention - that boy in the cage in the video is Chico - he hasnt aged/grown up much so it can only be a most a few years after Peace walker.
possible 1976 - those choppers are black hawks which were just off the shelf then,(though they didnt enter service till 79, mgs is usually a bit ahead).

- the game could possibly cover several years though.

1974-95 is a relatively quiet period in the mgs timeline so there is plenty of space there for a ground zeros story to span several years.

big boss first meets Frank Jaegar aka Grey Fox and Naomi Hunter in 1980. Raiden is also born sometime in the mid 80's (though he and Big Boss never met).

Kojima also said ground zeros would be a prequel to mgs5, - i really dont see how another mgs game could take place in the timeframe between ground zeros and mg1 (unless they are going to milk it)

- so ground zeros could go wright up as far as 1988
- i.e. big boss's retirement from field duty (after he rescued a 5yr old sniper wolf in iran/iraq).
- also 1988 is when he created Outer Heaven - that would be a good ending for the game and would tie everything together
- with MGS5 being a remake of the original Metal Gear games i.e. MG1 which is set in 1995(originally released in 1987)

anyways at 40-60 years of age Snakes/Big Boss's voice wouldnt have changed too much - so David Hayter should voice it.

ground zeroes wont go past the year 1988 id say, so we most likely wont see Solid Snake, who would then only be 16 - so even if we did see him (and hear him), to me it would seem more logical to get someone else to voice young Solid Snake and leave David Hayter voice Big Boss since he is nearer to his age. could David pull off an teenage Solid Snakes voice ?, - couldnt they use computers to change Davids voice slightly to make it sound younger.
I'm sure David Hayter will be back, assuming he isn't too busy with his movie career.

Since the Japanese VA is still the same guy that voices Snake, I wouldn't be surprised if David Hayter does, but keep in mind that Big Boss looks a lot older, so he's clearly aged a bit, and he's a smoker, which jacks up your voice anyway.
hate to bust your balls podgeG but big boss met Frank yager aka grey fox in portable ops but he was known as NULL and instead of a katana its a machete and that's who I believe the disfigured man is or volgin
Well looks like David Hayter might not be in the MGSV unless things changes. We'll see.
