Microsoft in Legal Trouble in Germany

Well it looks like Microsoft is in some legal trouble over in Europe. A German court has ruled for an injuction for Motorola Mobility against the distribution of the Xbox 360 as well as Windows 7. Why? Because Microsoft has been found to be in violation of a couple of patents regarding video playback and coding.

When reached for comment, Motorola Mobility said: "We are pleased that the Mannheim Court found that Microsoft products infringe Motorola Mobility's intellectual property. As a path forward, we remain open to resolving this matter. Fair compensation is all that we have been seeking for our intellectual property."

Microsoft of course is not going to take it quietly and a spokesman was quoted as saying: "This is one step in a long process, and we are confident that Motorola will eventually be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms for the benefit of consumers who enjoy video on the web."

A US court has also banned Motorala from taking any sort of action until the matter is looked into further.

Sue Sue Sue - that's the way to go in this day and age...I wonder though who is actually in the right/wrong here?

I don't know much about IP and if Motorola Mobility is just trying to cash in on Microsoft, or if Microsoft actually did something skeevy but it's quite lame how often these kind of these crop up in the news.

I remember when J.K. Rowling was sued by that guy because he said she stole his idea for the HP series and profited off it, I don't even remember the end result but I know that it was a huge debacle.

I guess I'll find out more once we hear what further action is going to be taken (if any) against either side.
