Nintendo's handheld line still going strong as it announces New 2DS XL

New Nintendo 2DS XL Hey! Pikmin Miitopia 3DS

It was largely believed by many that 3DS was on its way out by the end of the year due to the arrival of Nintendo's new Switch (which released in March), but given the new 3DS games announced in the latest Nintendo Direct as well as today's news, we may not have seen the last of the 3DS/2DS line just yet.

Say hello to the New 2DS XL, a new, sleeker model that loses the slate aesthetic of the original 2DS and instead marries the clamshell aesthetic of its 3DS sibling, minus the 3D. Aside from the new look, XL specifications (larger screen size), and lighter weight, it appears there's no new functionality added since the New 3DS and New 3DS XL launched a few years back, so this is purely an aesthetic change.

Check out the video highlighting it below to get a better look at the new handheld's design.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL will launch in a black and blue variation on July 28th for $149.99. Two new games, Hey! Pikmin and Miitopia, will also be launching alongside the new handheld SKU on the same day.

What are your thoughts on the New Nintendo 2DS XL?

This seems kinda pointless. I mean, I guess it's a slightly cheaper option, but other than that...why bother? I've been planning on getting a New 3DS XL at some point (mostly because I need an XL and there's no point in getting an original model when New exists) but this is still more than I really want to pay for one since I still have a functional 3DS. Maybe if these ever reach the sale prices of its tinier cousins (like $100) I'll care about them.

Mark my words: these'll be marked down to $100-120 when the holidays roll around. And not because they won't sell; it's just something they always do. This will be their big holiday deal and last (or second to last) major push to sell as many 3DS's as they can before the line ends.

I'll go ahead and make an announcement, Next year new 3DS again :)

I guess I could get this since I don't have a 3DS and haven't had a Nintendo Handheld since Gameboy color. Does this basically play all of games that are compatible with 3DS? I remember 2DS weren't compatible with some games. I'll probably end up waiting til Black Friday again. I was mad I missed last year's 3DS deal. I do like the design of the New 2DS though.

Also what's with the "New" in every dang new version lol. There's been like 10 already. They need to come up with cool prototype names. xD
