Anonymous Claims to Have Hacked PSN Again; Turns Out to be a Hoax

Sony PSN Anonymous hackings

PSN users had quite a rude wake-up call this morning when hacking group extraordinaire Anonymous tweeted that they had hacked PSN once again and included a link to a list of supposed stolen email addresses and other encrypted info.

However, Kotaku discovered that the list Anonymous tweeted was identical to one that had been posted back in March, leading to the assumption that Anonymous' claim was fake. Sure enough, Anonymous deleted the tweet from their profile, and Sony gave the following comment on the matter:

"We’ve confirmed that the recent claim that PlayStation Network was illegally hacked and that customer passwords and email addresses were accessed is completely false."

That's right, it was all a hoax. False alarm, folks.

This does lead to other questions though, such as whether or not this was an intentional hoax that was approved by Anonymous' leadership, or if it was a rogue Anonymous member who decided to tweet the fake announcement on his own. Given Anonymous' nature, it's likely we'll never know unless they make a statement on the mishap.

There was actually an error with my credit card Monday night on the PSN. They are refusing to let me take advantage of the Sound Shapes sale that ended Tuesday. I am not a happy camper. I will be even less of a happy camper if my CC info was leaked, again.

Wait a minute, they ended the Sound Shapes sale for PS Plus members ($11.99)? Or are you referring to the PS3/Vita bundle? Or both?
