E3 2012: Naughty Dog Claims The Last Of Us Demo Was Not Scripted

The big debate raging online right now is whether or not The Last Of Us demo shown last night during Sony's E3 presentation was scripted or not. If you're to believe Naughty Dog, then everything shown in the demo was in fact happening on the fly.

We just can't see it yet. In an interview on the Playstation Blog's E3 stream, a developer for The Last Of Us stated the demo is apparently being played by journalists behind closed doors. Those few people who are lucky enough to play it are finding multiple ways to go through the demo and the scenes that played out at E3 last night can happen at any time. Including Ellie whipping bricks at people.

While there is no way we can know for sure if this is true since none of us have access to the demo yet, I can't wait to see what gaming websites have to say once they get access to the demo as well. You can view the stream at the link below.

It clearly wasn't scripted. Although the person playing obviously knew how they wanted to proceed through the scene, the gameplay could have played out a number of different ways. The kill animations in Uncharted are really cinematic as well so it shouldn't surprise people that they are in The Last of Us as well.
The game seems pretty linear and some things are definitely scripted, even if they might happen in a different spot. I'm sure whenever Joel runs out of ammo it triggers the whole brick thing no matter where you are.
I thought the presentation was pretty darn slick. I especially liked the brutal, close-range combat that was presented. Scripted or no, The Last of Us is gob-smackingly gorgeous. I seriously wanted to try out the demo just to take in the scenery. The firearm combat was only somewhat interesting and reminded me of I Am Alive's "few bullets, fake 'em out" mentality. If you've never played I Am Alive, check out this gameplay footage.
