Sony Purchases Streaming Giant Gaikai

Cloud-based gaming definitely has been the in thing as of late so it makes sense that big companies like Sony are interested in it. Today Sony announced that they were set to acquire Gaikai. How much does this deal cost them? Oh, not much, just $380 million. If you aren't completely familiar with the name "Gaikai" then all you really need to know is that it's a streaming game service.

Sony Computer Entertainment isn't revealing their hand completely, mostly just that they have picked up the leader in cloud-based gaming. SCE says they are going to use this to "establish a new cloud service" using "Gaikai's revolutionary technology and infrastructure."

Here is what President and Group CEO of SCE, Andrew House, had to say about this latest and rather massive acquisition:

"By combining Gaikai's resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE's extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences. SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices."

Gaikia's CEO, David Perry, also issued a statement:

"SCE has built an incredible brand with PlayStation and has earned the respect of countless millions of gamers worldwide. We're honored to be able to help SCE rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide."

What do you think? Does this purchase give Sony an edge for the next generation? How would you like to see streaming services integrated with consoles?

Yes there is an edge because it is a service that the others might not have. If MS or Nintendo doesn't have some kind of program like this, then Sony is going to be the only one that can offer such a thing and some people might buy the ps4 just for that. But, this to me seem like they are trying to push more into the direction of digital.
I like cloud gaming over buying digital downloads if the price is right. The problem with digital downloads is the HDDs coming with systems aren't big enough.
If Sony does cloud gaming with the PS4 I hope they have a subscription fee where you can choose from a large selection of games. I also think Sony needs to upgrade their servers which are already slow.
Smart move for Sony. If cloud gaming does take off they will have a pretty solid foundation already in place with Gaikai. I'm sure if anybody can make it work well it's Sony.
