Square Enix CEO Addresses Final Fantasy Versus XIII Cancellation Rumors

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Final Fantasy Versus 13 Square Enix Yoichi Wada PS3

Apparently someone thought it would be funny to spread a rumor about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which was first unveiled in 2006, getting the ax. Said rumor went viral throughout gaming communities on the internet, and until now, we haven't gotten a word whether it was true or not. CEO of Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, told us himself through Twitter that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is indeed still kicking.

Here is the translation provided by Siliconera:

"Someone has been spreading a false rumor that Versus has been canceled, it seems. [Laughs.] Just now, we finished our regular Versus meeting. If you could see the city in today’s presentation it would sweep you off your feet."

Hopefully after all this hubbub, Square Enix will provide us with some new screenshots or even footage from the long-awaited Final Fantasy game!

Do you still care about Final Fantasy Versus XIII? Do you expect it COULD still get canceled or changed?

I was so disappointed with XIII and XIII-2, I'm not sure if I even care about Versus anymore. I feel like Final Fantasy has been headed downhill for a while.

How long has it been since this game was announced? 5-6 years? It's reached the point in development hell where, even if ti does somehow get released, it will end up being a horrible game.

I still feel like it's going to come out, but I feel like they will most likely have to switch up the name and change it from versus XIII (To Type-1? Why not.) at some point. I feel like the "XIII" name holds a stigma among a lot of gamers nowadays (even I'm lukewarm about it, and I don't necessarily dislike the games.)...well, so does 'final fantasy' but that's another problem.

Also, let me just add, after 5-6 years of development, we're supposed to be reassured that they're showing off art assets/environments in internal meetings? Shouldn't it maybe be a bit farther along by now?

I'm feeling like it's time to start pulling out DNF references. See, this game is like Duke Nukem, but will likely end up as a "did not finish" project. Seriously, it's taken way too long for this title considering they pumped out XIII and XIII-2 within, what, a year or two of each other?

I think the first 4-5 years were spent tinkering around with the engine and making it look as pretty as possible (no joke), but yeah, I know what you mean. If anything, they should've just spent most of the time on the actual game itself before working on perfecting the graphics.
