Yooka-Laylee gets firm release date, Wii U version cancelled

Yooka-Laylee Playtonic Games PS4 Xbox One PC Switch

Last we've heard of Yooka-Laylee was that it was being delayed to 2017, but wipe that frown off your face because Playtonic Games has finally announced a firm release date for the game: April 11, 2017!

However, on a somewhat down note, Playtonic Games also revealed that they've run into unexpected technical issues with the Wii U version, so they're cancelling that version and will instead put the game out on Nintendo Switch. No release date for the Switch version has been announced yet, so it's likely it will come later on after the game releases on other platforms.

Still, there's a lot to look forward to here. Playtonic Games revealed a trailer for a brand new world called Captial Cashino, a casino-themed level that looks pretty neat. Also, anyone who pre-orders Yooka-Laylee on PS4, Xbox One, or PC will receive an instant unlock of the Toybox mode, which is a self-contained sandbox mode that serves as a preview for what to expect in the main game.

In any case, you won't have to wait too much longer for the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie; after all, five months isn't that long of a time!

I put down $500 for this game :) Got the e-mail today telling all about this. It's sad for Wii U users that wanted this and might not have another option but not much they can really do about it if it just doesn't work.

The Toybox demo is fun to play and just shows off a bit of what the game will be like. The Toybox demo has some fun secrets to find like a room with different floor textures and sounds and a room showing off different effects. The big fun part of the Toybox is it's like a beta world and comes complete with the goal to explore and collect all the 200 feathers and take on fun platforming challenges. After all 200 feathers are found a super secret button will appear somewhere in the world to reveal a super secret room. I never did find the button or the room.

Do you know if the Toybox demo is running at 60fps? I was watching that trailer and thought that it looked incredibly smooth; I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow got the whole game running like that.

On PS4 at least it runs at 30fps. PC is probably 60fps/unlocked/whatever.

I got caught up in the hype and ended up pre-purchasing it on PSN today so I could play the Toybox demo. I love the Banjo-Kazooie games (well, the first two. I never played the GBA ones and we won't mention that other one) and this looks like it'll carry on the legacy of those games while still being a unique adventure on its own. The Toybox was a good indication of how the game plays so now I'm mostly just excited to see where the duo goes and what they do there. ^_^

Do they just send you the Toybox demo automatically after pre-ordering it then? I'm guessing this doesn't apply to the physical version. xD

First thought seeing this title thread was thinking Venom will either be sad or excited in some other way. This definitely looks fun. I gotta replay Banjo Kazooie from Rare Replay before this since it brings in nostalgic memories. I'd like to get this on either console PS4/XB1.

It pops up in your download list right after. I don't think it applies to boxed copies (the only pre-order I could find for it was Amazon and it doesn't mention it) which is part of the reason I went digital. Other reason is I'm starting to want more digital to do less disc swapping on PS4 since I already have a bunch of physical games for it.

April should be a great time for this to release. After Horizon, Mass Effect, and South Park people will be looking for something a bit lighter.

Interestingly enough, it kind of reminds me of this year where Ratchet and Clank also ended up releasing in April (which was a great time for it to release).
