PS3 Getting Another Model?

PS3 Sony

Documents have surfaced from the FCC showcasing a possible new PS3 model. This wouldn't be a massive surprise, seeing as how Sony often creates multiple versions of their devices over time. The PS3 was originally released back in 2006 and the Slim version arrived in 2009. Now that we're in 2012 it seems prime time to trim down on costs more and bring out a final version of the system.

Unfortunately the FCC filing isn't especially helpful to look at. The only image in the papers is used to show where the FCC label would go, which is at the bottom of the unit. What the image does illustrate though is that the system (if it comes to fruition) will be rectangular. In comparison, the Slim was much boxier.

If this latest rendition of the PS3 is going to happen, it may be announced during Gamescom. Gamescom is of course an E3-like trade convention for games and takes place in Germany.

Do you think the PS3 could use another redesign?

if it's smaller + lighter and at a discounted price, i think i'll bite.
Sony only released one revision for the previous two home consoles, right before the next console was released. Interesting that they are releasing yet another even slimmer revision, but I guess this generation has gone on longer than the others did and the PS4 will probably be announced soon.
Another PS3 variant. Great, does this one come with a built-in cooler? Seriously, how many revisions of the same console do you need? I hope they don't think a subscription console will do well. I believe the XBOX is already well on its way to failure using that weird scheme. Keeping a low, set price for the PS3 should net Sony a decent profit for those who haven't submitted the console's call yet.
I just wanted to pop in to say that systems often actually have a fair bit of variations, just that most aren't obvious. We all know about the PSone and PStwo systems which were smaller versions of the PS and PS2 but did you know about all the other, much smaller system revisions?

Here are the multiple revisions for PS and here is a look at the many PS2 models. I've never really understood why they changed up such small things in between versions, but they probably had something to do with further reducing cost/possibly attempting to curtain modding.
I wonder if native PSone game support will be scrapped in this one to make it more cost productive. If not, I'm not really sure why they're doing the redesign.

True. I guess redesign would have been a better term for me to use. Of course the PSP has had many different versions.
What's the point of this? Aren't they going to release the ps4 or at least announce it. I thought with the ps2 we had the regular and the slim. I think we had some color changes like white or silver. But by no means did I recall it being a different model. I think with the ps3, the only thing really is changing the harddrive and that will suffice as "new" models. Like someone said above, it'll be find as long as it is slim or smaller with a lower price. Otherwise, no point in getting it.
Releasing a new version now would likely give the PS3 the legs to surpass 360 in WW sales. It could also give the PS3 legs to last beyond the release of PS4 (for better or worse).
NO! The PS3 should not become the pS2 (remember what a shell of a system that became after cheapening it?"

250 and 300 IS NOT a lot for a system. (Poor) People, go out, and buy it.
