Rumor: PS4 Priced Cheaper Than PS3?

Sony PlayStation next-gen rumor

It's time to don your tinfoil hats once again as yet another rumor about Sony's upcoming system has gotten out. This time it's not about system specs, used games, or even a new controller design. Instead, it is the still tasty rumor of a price for the system.

This latest rumor comes thanks to TheTimes.co.uk, an extension of The Times, a U.K. newspaper. They have not gone so far as to say this is 100% true but that "industry sources and leaked internal documents suggest" the price they've heard is correct. And what is said price? £300, or $465, for those of us wanting to see the conversion.

Although systems are given their own prices per region, it would not be so far off to imagine a new home system costing somewhere between $400-$500. The PS3 famously launched at a price poitns of $499/$599, which was deemed too high at the time by many. Perhaps Sony have learned their lesson from that. Or perhaps this information is bogus and Sony will not reveal the actual price for months. If anything, we may just be lucky enough to hear a price point during tomorrow's PlayStation event.

I'm hoping they mention price at the event, but I'm guessing they will hold off on that. If it is close to $400, I'll consider getting one at launch.
After the rocky start the PS3 got thanks mostly to it's price, Sony would be wise to launch the PS4 within a more affordable price range. Obviously they can't afford to sell themselves short, but if taking out backwards compatibility with PS1/2 discs helped them lower the PS3's price, then not having it at all (if that streaming thing is true) would be a good start.

I'm fine with them taking out backwards compatibility as long as existing PSN purchases carry over to the PS4. I will be highly upset if digital purchases don't carry over considering how much money I've invested in downloads.

Yeah, I don't see why they wouldn't carry over. I mainly meant PS4 doesn't need to be able to play PS3 discs, but there's no reason it shouldn't play digital PS1/2/3 games from PSN.
As long as it has BC and none of that no used game bs I don't care if it was 1000 bucks.

BUT a nice 400-500 would be nice.

I hope the Controllers are BC as well (like u can make the PS2 play on the pS3 w/ a converter(
