New Yoshi's Island, Mario Party, and Other 3DS Games' Release Dates Announced

Jason Clement

Today's Nintendo Direct brought with it a plethora of announcements, some seemingly bigger than others, but most of it being exciting news nonetheless. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that a new Yoshi's Island game will be coming to the 3DS.

It will be the third entry in the series, following the original SNES title and 2006's DS entry, and it looks to be consistent in keeping with the visual style of the series and carries over many of the abilities from previous games in addition to ones that we don't know about just yet. No official title or release date has been confirmed just yet, and Iwata did not say whether it was a 2013 title, so it seems likely that it may be a 2014 title.

A new entry in the Mario Party series was also announced for 3DS, complete with new power-ups and seven all new boards with new features. More info will be revealed on it later on in the year, but we know that it'll be released sometime this Winter.

New information was made available on Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, such as the inclusion of a mode that is optimized for portable play and makes things a bit easier for the player, as well as the original, more difficult mode available on the Wii version. In addition, 8 new levels will be included, along with local wireless co-op, and you can look forward to playing it on May 24 (through retail or on the 3DS eShop).

Nintendo also shed light on when we can expect to see the The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (which were previously announced earlier in the year to be coming). Both will be available for purchase on the 3DS eShop on May 30.

Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move, which we saw announced in February's Nintendo Direct, will also be available on the 3DS eShop on May 9. The game will feature over 180 different stages and the ability to create custom levels as well as sharing them.

Professor Layton & The Azran Legacy has been confirmed to be coming to North America in 2014, and it will feature some 500 puzzles and will be the last game in the second trilogy of Layton games. It's also been said in the past that this may be the last game to feature Hershel Layton as the protagonist as well.

Finally, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team has an official release date of August 11. The story focuses on Mario and Luigi's adventure on Pillow Island as Peach mysteriously gets sucked into Luigi's Dream World. As such, you'll enter Luigi's dreams (by having Luigi sleep on fall asleep on special pillow stones) as Mario and manipulate Luigi's face in order to affect changes in the dream world's levels.
