Will 2016 be the best year in gaming in recent history?

Recommended Posts

So if you aren't aware, the years that are largely considered the best years in recent gaming history are 2007, 2011, and 2013. This is determined basically by the number of critically acclaimed games released in each year; the higher the number, the more memorable the year.

Here were the biggest games out in 2007

  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  • Bioshock
  • Rock Band
  • Mass Effect
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • God of War II
  • World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
  • Pokemon Diamond & Pearl
  • Persona 3
  • Assassin's Creed
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
  • Crysis
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  • Super Paper Mario
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • The Witcher
  • Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations
  • The Orange Box
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Here's 2011's biggest games

  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Mario Kart 7
  • COD: Modern Warfare 3
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • LittleBigPlanet 2
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Dragon Age 2
  • Portal 2
  • inFamous 2
  • Dead Space 2
  • The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection
  • Pokemon Black & White
  • Duke Nukem Forever
  • Fable 3
  • LA Noire
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Rayman Origins
  • Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
  • Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
  • Yakuza 4
  • Killzone 3
  • Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
  • Limbo
  • Bastion
  • Catherine
  • No More Heroes: Hero's Paradise
  • Pushmo
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic

Here's 2013

  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
  • Pikmin 3
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Tearaway
  • Pokemon X & Y
  • Puppeteer
  • Beyond: Two Souls
  • Rain
  • AC4: Black Flag
  • Batman: Arkham Origins
  • Gran Turismo 6
  • The Wonderful 101
  • Ducktales Remastered
  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Remake
  • Rayman Legends
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

  • Dead Rising 3
  • COD: Ghosts
  • Resogun
  • SteamWorld Dig
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV
  • StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
  • DmC: Devil May Cry

Anyhow, lots of great games to live up to, but I have reason to believe 2016 could be one of the biggest years yet looking at this list of games coming out and that have already released-

  • The Legend of Zelda (Wii U)
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
  • The Last Guardian
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Star Fox Zero
  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • Quantum Break
  • No Man's Sky
  • The Tomorrow Children
  • Drawn to Death
  • Doom
  • Pokemon Z (rumored)
  • Pokken Tournament
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Cuphead
  • Y2K
  • Bravely Second
  • Far Cry Primal
  • Street Fighter V
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes HD
  • Paper Mario Wii U (rumored)
  • Mother 3 (rumored)
  • Dragon Quest VII
  • Dragon Quest VIII
  • Firewatch
  • The Witness
  • Fire Emblem Fates
  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

And that's only the games we know so far, not even including NX.

What do you think? Do you think 2016 will be the best year in gaming yet?

Oh man I think 2017 is gonna top this one Jason. Have you seen the list?! My god it's so good that when I saw it, the list did a Men In Black thing with the erase memories that I don't know what's on the list.

Though really I'm excited for this year's releases even though I don't have the PS4/XBone. Also I had no idea Mass Effect comes out this year (thought it was next year and man time sure goes by fast) and wait Mother 3 is rumored?! Holy smokes I hope that's true. :o

I had no idea those years were considered the best. Looking at the list they do look like good years.

This year is looking good too. Zelda, The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4 and Paper Mario alone are a pretty big deal.

I'm sorry but how does COD get on these lists? And remake of games shouldn't be considered since they were once already great games. Remaking a great game into better quality shouldn't really count. It is kind of cheating.

I don't know about this being the best year since we haven't finished it out and some games can still be a flop. But this is a great post for me to use as a list of games to collect that are critically acclaimed.

For JRPGs?  Hell yes.  For others?  I dunno but maybe ;)

I thought classically people tend to consider 1998 as arguably one of the best (if not THE BEST) gaming years.

Anyway, I remember people were thinking the same of last year but a lot got delayed (or stuff was disappointing, like Arkham Knight)....so I would not be surprised if it was the same story for this year Basically just enough games will get delayed to people think "It was really good, but.... [insert games]". I expect it to be excellent for RPGs regardless but I'm too sure beyond that (would not be surprised at all if a lot of highly anticipated Square-Enix games weren't this year.). Personally, I'm skeptical of a lot of the games you listed out, for many reasons, but I'm looking forward to them (and stuff not listed WAY MORE) for hopefully this year.

Dark Souls 3 hype?

I have intentionally avoided media for it, but I know that I want it from the brief bits I've seen and heard. As soon as I saw the Bloodborne-ish fast gameplay and more varied weapon sets I was like "SIGN ME UP!"

98 is definitely a good year, not sure if it is the greatest though. I can see how some of those games on the list can be a big argument alone though.
