    Game Podunk Suggestion Thread

    I believe the maximum avatar size is 100 x 100, so make sure it's at least that size if not smaller. Anything bigger than that won't stay.

    Pushmo Review

    Developer: Intelligent Systems Publisher: Nintendo Platform: 3DS eShop Release Date: Out Now ESRB: E Every once in a while, a game pops out of left field that really surprises me. Personally, those are my favorite type of game experiences, sometimes even more so than a great game that you expected (and wanted) to be good from the outset. So when I learned of a new original game called Pushmo (also called Pullblox in Europe) and that it was coming to the eShop, I didn't expect too much; heck, I'd only heard about it for less than a week before it arrived. But when I booted it up and played through the first few levels, I knew right away that this game would be something special. In Pushmo, you control a sumo-like character named Mallo. The basic premise of the game has you pushing in and pulling out certain arrangements of shapes and blocks in order to create steps for your character to gradually reach the top of each puzzle (or "Pushmo") so you can rescue the child stuck at the top. It's a stunningly simple concept, yet one that's quite clever and has a bit of depth to it at the same time. Later levels introduce a few more elements in the form of manholes that you'll use to warp from one part of the Pushmo to another, and buttons that pull blocks of the same color out all the way. At the beginning, it starts out with rather elementary concepts, holding your hand just enough until you get a hold of what it is you need to do, but the difficulty builds rather quickly. However, the difficulty curve isn't entirely consistent over the course of the game as you'll often do an easy one-star level followed by a two-star level that is a little more complex and then another two-star level that should have been a three star level (or even a difficult three-star level followed by a simple three-star level). Regardless, each puzzle is genuinely a blast to play, and the bigger and more complex a Pushmo is, the more fun it is to solve. There's also a level creator that gives you the tools to design your very own Pushmo, and if that's not enough, you can save it as a QR code and share it with your friends or even post it online for others to scan and play through. This is easily one of the coolest aspects of the game, as it ensures near infinite replayability. Just the thought of a downloadable title offering as much content like this is staggering in and of itself, but the level creator is the real deal. Even now, people have created and exchanged hundreds (or even thousands) of Pushmo puzzles in forums online, with some based on classic game sprites, and others representing famous actors, cartoon characters and more. From the design of the adorable characters to the bright and cheery pastel visuals of the pop-up storybook aesthetic of the surroundings, Pushmo has a very appealing look to it. In addition, the framerate never chokes and holds up extremely well even with the 3D turned all of the way on. Also, it must be said that this game utilizes 3D the best out of all the games I've played on the handheld so far, even topping the likes of Super Mario 3D Land. It doesn't do anything truly amazing with it, but it does give each level a very nice sense of depth that helps you better determine which blocks have been pushed in and which have been pulled out. Even still, you can play it in 2D, but this is one title you definitely want the 3D slider on for, if possible. When it comes down to it, Pushmo represents the very best of what a digital download game is supposed to be. Not only does it deliver a fresh new IP that introduces a different type of puzzle experience, but it gives you near infinite replayability in the form of it's Pushmo Studio. The ability to create and share puzzles with others while playing new designs that other people have come up with is a pretty incredible addition, even more so than the 200+ ready made puzzles that already await you in Pushmo's main mode. If you have a 3DS and love puzzle games, you should not miss this game; it's an absolute must-own title for any 3DS owner. Pros: + Original, fresh concept and characters + Visuals are extremely solid for a downloadable game + Level editor adds tremendous replay value Cons: - If you don't like puzzle games, you won't find much to like Overall Score: 9.5 (out of 10) Fantastic Pushmo may be the biggest surprise hit of the year. With over 200+ puzzles and the ability to create and share your own, this a title that no 3DS owner should be without. It's easily the best eShop title to date.

Just a few days ago, Twisted Metal co-director David Jaffe made it known that he was leaving developer Eat, Sleep, Play after his tenure on Twisted Metal is over, but didn't say much of his plans other than that he wants to open a new development studio. It was also reported that he would work on DLC for Twisted Metal in the meantime, but it now seems that the report was not true. Jaffe explained that there are no plans for DLC or a sequel for the game, but at the same time isn't writing the series off for good, saying that he would love to make another game in the series down the line. For now, he remains committed to finishing his "maintenance contract" with Sony for Twisted Metal, in which a developer continues to stay and address issues in a just released game that they may not have been aware of before release. The contract expires at the end of March, by which time Jaffe plans to start cultivating ideas for new games and building his new team. "There's no corporate filings, there's no official company name yet; 99 percent of my day is Twisted Metal right now," Jaffe explained. "There's four games I would love to do, the one I do really depends on the team I can put together and the money that I can find to make it. There's a survival-horror genre in there, a real low-budget survival horror, kinda guerilla film making style. Not in terms of the look, but in terms of that kind of financing and that kind of production." A survival-horror Jaffe game? Sounds interesting enough. He also went on to confirm that his plans are to develop games for consoles and browsers, so it'll be interesting to see where that leads him.

  12. Guys, it seems that IPB is already beginning to transfer the domain to this site as we speak. I didn't want it to happen this soon because I planned to make the announcement to our members today, but now it looks like were stuck regarding that. I'm trying to work it out to see if they can delay it a few more days.

    Skylanders Giants Coming Later This Year

    Did you enjoy last year's breakout hit Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure? If so, you'll be happy to know that Activision has even more in store for the series this year with the recently announced Skylanders Giants. The game carries on the same theme of using toy figurines that are scanned into a virtual world, but this time around the game will feature "giants" that are more than twice the size of the original Skylanders. You'll use the giants to interact with the world in new ways that reflect their own abilities; for example, if there is a boulder blocking the path for a normal Skylander, a giant will be able to smash it to pieces allowing you to proceed. In addition, the game will feature bigger worlds, new challenges and sidequests, battle modes, and 16 new Skylanders- 8 will be regular sized and 8 will be giants. Skylanders Giants is currently slated to release in Fall 2012.

    Favorite Final Fantasy Character

    Oh man, where to start, haha... My favorites are Shadow (FFVI), Tifa (FFVII), Beatrix (FFIX), Blank (FFIX), and Balthier (FFXII). In particular, I really like Shadow not only for his cool outfit and appearance, but also because he's literally on no one's side until the very end of the game, and I thought that was an interesting dynamic. Similarly, I love how they built Beatrix up to be a really strong female in FFIX, breaking the damsel in distress cliche that many games were still attuned to.
  15. David Jaffe, the co-director and lead designer of the upcoming Twisted Metal has made it known that he plans on leaving the development studio in order to open a new game studio in San Diego. The news also comes after the fact that the developer has layed off 8 people, only to continue on with 26 now. This is likely due to the fact that the 8 who were layed off may have been hired on just for the development of Twisted Metal, but now that the game is complete, their jobs have come to an end. Still, Jaffe remains commited to supporting Twisted Metal with DLC in the meantime while departing after to open up the new studio.

    Naughty Dog Almost Made Jak and Daxter 4

    Yep, instead of the game we now know as The Last of Us, Naughty Dog was just about to make the next Jak and Daxter game. So just what happened that caused them to reverse course and decide to go with a post-apocalyptic game like The Last of Us instead? As you may know, Naughty Dog's dev team split into two after Uncharted 2 was finished, and the team that wasn't going to be working on Uncharted 3 was slated to develop the next Jak and Daxter. The problem came when they discovered their new ideas strayed too far from the aspects that made Jak and Daxter what it was. Creative director Neil Druckmann mentioned in an interview with Game Informer how they have tons of folders filled with scrapped ideas because of this. Studio co-founder Evan Wells had a few things to add as well, saying: "Even though we wanted to give fans another Jak and Daxter, we felt we weren't going to give them the game that they wanted, and that we would end up either limiting the direction that the company had this passion for while simultaneously not creating the game that fans wanted. We just realized we were going to just do everybody a disservice." However, Wells didn't rule out the possibility of seeing Jak and Daxter again in the future, saying that it's possible that the dev team that worked on Uncharted 3 could work on it; however, he seems to think they would run into the same problems and issues that Druckmann's team ran into, so it might be a while before Naughty Dog works on the series once more. The good news is that you won't have to wait long for your Jak and Daxter fix because the Jak and Daxter Collection (which collects and sees the first three games in the series remastered in HD) releases in stores tomorrow.   17. Good news, Star Wars and shooter fans- rumor has it that Star Wars Battlefront 3 may be in development yet again after being stuck in development limbo unofficially for the last five years. This rumor comes from Playstation Lifestyle, which reported that a new job listing at development studio Spark Unlimited is looking for a "senior combat designer for a 3rd Person Action/Adventure sequel in a high-profile science fiction franchise currently greenlit for full production development for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC markets." The site also found a LinkedIn profile of a former Spark Unlimited software engineer that worked on "unannounced third person sword fighting game (well known IP, Xbox 360, PS3)" which may be referring to lightsaber combat. In addition, yet another LinkedIn profile for another staff member lists one of their current projects as "AAA third person shooter using Unreal Engine and Kynapse AI middleware." Now none of these in particular point to the game being exclusively Star Wars-related, but the key evidence is in what Spark tweeted last year, and it refers to one of two unannounced games that they are working on right now: "Publisher hasn't stated when or where the announcement will take place. The time and place could be close or far, far away." Hmm, a high profile science fiction franchise that's also a well known IP in gaming mixed with a third person shooter that's set in a time and place far, far away? It doesn't take much to think what that could mean when you put the clues together, though to be fair, it could also be a totally new Star Wars game outside of the Battlefront series. Lucasarts has not confirmed or denied the existence of Battlefront 3 as of yet so this remains very much a rumor at the moment but trust me, they're totally making it the evidence is mounting and it seems downright conclusive. What do you think? Is the game in development Battlefront 3, or is there a chance that it's something else?
  18. So everybody is pretty much aware of how Nintendo's problems last year have caused its first ever yearly loss in some twenty years, right? Turns out they're not alone- Sony's soon-to-be new CEO Kaz Hirai alluded to the fact that Sony is in similar waters at the moment, even going so far as to say that turning the company around to profitability will be his biggest challenge yet. Hirai's thoughts on the matter come after Sony's announcement earlier in the week that they are projecting a loss of $2.9 billion at the end of the fiscal year, which will also mark their fourth consecutive year in the red. Sony claims the poor performance is attributed in part to a disruption in the supply chain by floods in Thailand, deterioration of economies in "developed countries," and "unfavorable foreign exchange." "We really need to buckle down and be realistic," Hirai said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "I don't think everybody is on board, but I think people are coming around to the idea that if we don't turn this around, we could be sitting in some serious trouble." Hirai went on to say that his strategy for turning the company around will be to sell the customer on a superior user experience instead of resting on past glories. He'll take over the reins of the company as CEO when Howard Stringer steps down April 1.
