    Far Cry 4 Coming in November 2014

    Ubisoft announced this week during a financial presentation that Far Cry 4 will be releasing November 18, 2014 on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. According to the slide show, Ubisoft's Montreal, Red Storm, Toronto, Shangai and Kiev studios are all working on the game. They describe Far Cry 4 as, " A new step towards the revolution of the shooter genre." Financially, Ubisoft expects it to be among the top 10 best selling games of the year. Far Cry 4 will be set in the Himalayan region of Kyrat governed over by a tyrannical king. It will feature a wide variation of weapons and vehicles.   4. Capybara Games has announced that its over-the-top, side-scrolling, shoot 'em up game Super Time Force is set to release next week on May 14. The game follows the exploits of a time-traveling military organization with a unique game mechanic—upon dying (which you'll do, a lot), you'll travel back in time with more of your doppelgangers to take on the enemy with an even footing, resulting in some truly chaotic gameplay. While it was originally slated for release last year, the game was held back in order to launch simultaneously on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, so next week you'll have a chance to find out just how crazy the gameplay really is.   5. Today, Disney officially announced its next iteration of the Disney Infinity franchise, this time called Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes. The game is slated to feature the likes of the Avengers, Spider-Man, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and villains such as Loki and MODOK, and they'll all share the same type of visual aesthetic that the characters from the first game had. Also, like the first Disney Infinity, this one will also feature a starter set which includes Thor, Black Widow, and Iron Man, the Avengers play set, and two minigame-discs. All characters, power discs, and the base from Disney Infinity 1.0 will work here as well. This year will feature 20 new characters and 80 new power discs releasing. Speaking of the latter, the power discs will now feature new types such as costume changes and sidekicks. Super heroes will also figure into different category types (such as brawler, ranged, etc.) and will have their own branching skill trees that players can upgrade over the course of the game. The Toy Box mode is also said to be getting an overhaul this time around as the developers are spending a good 60% of their time on it in order to streamline building as well as letting players enter interior structures and even letting you decorate your own home with achievements and the like. Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes will be released this Fall on PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and iOS. Reportedly, a new starter kit will be required for the Xbox One version, but the PS3's base will be usable with the PS4 version of the game.     Review: Child of Light

    Developer: Ubisoft Montréal Publisher: Ubisoft Platforms: Wii U (eshop) PS4/PS3 (PSN) Xbox One/Xbox 360 (XBL), PC (Steam) Release Date: April 29, 2014 (Wii U, PS3,PS4) April 30, 2014 (PC, Xbox One/Xbox 360) Rating: E 10+ This review is based on the Wii U version of the game Child of Light is a 2D side-scrolling platformer/RPG hybrid that evokes a fairy tale-like aesthetic in its visuals and story. The main character in this tale is Aurora, a young princess with a pure heart whose soul was brought to the Kingdom of Lemuria. At first, the whole predicament seems like a nightmare to her and she wishes for nothing more to wake up from it all, but she soon discovers that it's all too real as she's thrust into a quest to reclaim the three sources of light and defeat the Black Queen who has taken over the realm. Now if you're wondering why this review started out with a poem, it's because the game's narrative and dialogue is told liberally through rhyming—again, much like many fairy tales of old used to be. Though a bit unorthodox at first, it does put a charming and unique spin on the way the story is told. Also, it can't be stated enough just how beautiful the art direction in this game is. Using the same UbiART Framework engine that Rayman Legends and its predecessor used, Ubisoft Montréal has brought to life the drawings and colors of a storybook fairy tale, and it's arguably even more impressive and surreal than the other two aforementioned games. The sheer attention to detail in animations (such as Aurora's constantly flowing hair or how her crown gets knocked off when she's attacked during battles) is astounding, as are the minute intricacies of the different paintings and backgrounds that make up each area. On the platforming side of the game (everything outside of battle mode, essentially), you control Aurora by herself, though you'll eventually meet characters that will join your party and assist you in your quest as well as in battles. Aurora also has a little elemental spirit (who literally looks like a rain drop) named Igniculus for a companion, and you'll be able to move him around the screen with the right analog stick (or if you're playing the Wii U version, you can assign him to a Wiimote so a second player can control him). He plays an important part in battles as I'll explain in a bit, but outside of them he can be used to collect orbs called wishes (which, if collected in a certain order, will help restore HP and MP) as well as open treasure chests and light beacons and switches that will help you progress through some of the game's light puzzles and dungeon areas. As you make your way through each area, you'll encounter various dark creatures and enemies, but you can choose to avoid them most of the time if you want. Still, you're doing no favors if you avoid most of them since you'll need the experience for tougher battles like the boss fights. If you do come into contact with one, a battle will start, though how it begins is contingent on how you approach the enemy. In a nice touch, you can actually gain the advantage of having first strike if you come at them from behind, but the same is also true of the opposite; get struck by them (or by a projectile) and they'll suddenly have the jump on you. Speaking of which, the battle system is without a doubt one of the best and most exciting parts of Child of Light. It's similar to the Active Time Battle system known to Final Fantasy fans, but a bit modified. Both your party's characters and the enemy characters adhere to a time bar on the bottom of the screen, starting on the left and ending up on the right side before you can execute your move. The last 20% or so of the right side of the bar is a red zone known as the casting phase. When a character first reaches this part of the bar, you'll be able to select their move which will then have its own, potentially shorter waiting period. Depending on the type of move you execute, the wait could be instantaneous (i.e. using items, defending), short, medium, long, or very long (most powerful magic). You can also only have two active party members at a time in a battle, but you can switch back and forth with any of them at the beginning of each turn. Where it gets really interesting is when you factor in the ability to use Igniculus's wish power to either slowly heal one of your characters or hinder an enemy character's progress, thus slowing them down and increasing their waiting time between moves. Just like when you're outside of battles, this uses up the wish bar, so you have to be careful with how you use it; if you run out of wishes, you'll have to wait for it to slowly refill. Something else you'll need to consider is the fact that if an enemy attacks one of your characters while they are in the casting phase, they'll be interrupted and have to start all over on the bar, but the opposite is also true. By taking advantage of Igniculus's ability to slow enemies down, you can turn battles in your favor by ensuring that the enemy's casting phase is interrupted, thus buying you time before they can attack again. This is a crucial part of the gameplay and it makes for some truly intense boss fights throughout as a result. The only downside to this mechanic is that you can pretty much game the system once you're down to one enemy left on the screen (including bosses), ensuring that you can almost always interrupt its casting phase. However, the bosses get around this somewhat by being faster and having some brutal counterattacks, buffs, and/or debuffs if you do interrupt them, making things a bit more interesting. These particular battles will also have you making full use of many of your characters' different abilities, keeping things fast-paced and strategic. Outside of battle, there is also a system that allows you to equip and craft gems called Oculi, which give your characters certain bonus and stat enhancements. For example, equipping Sapphire Oculi will make a character more resistant to fire attacks, while others can add attack bonuses, extra HP, and more. The whole system is extremely useful due to the ability to combine Oculi together to create even more powerful versions, giving you a degree of control over how you want to set up your characters, stat-wise. It's also fun to see what new Oculi you can make from combining others. There's also a branching skill tree where you'll use skill points gained from leveling up to unlock new stat bonuses and skills, allowing you to customize your characters in a way you see fit. Aside from the main quest, there are also a number of side quests you can undertake which often result in being rewarded with rare items as well as some additional side stories, like those of some of your companions. Your party members will also talk with each other in cutscenes occasionally after battles, lending to a greater sense of them being individuals with their own personalities and quirks. This is something Child of Light does exceptionally well—even in the shorter time span the game has compared to most other RPGs, you really do feel like you grow with your companions, each of which have their own motivations and desires. Not all of them are incredibly interesting, but you'll likely have a favorite or two among the bunch. In the end, Child of Light is, without a doubt, a triumph in every way. Its formula and fusion of storybook fairytale aesthetic combined with RPG and platforming elements make for one of the most fun, unique, and beautiful titles I've played in some time, and its soundtrack is also a joy to listen to. The story is exceptionally good as well, with many of the characters making it even stronger with their own sub-plots and struggles. Ubisoft has now also set the bar for downloadable games, not only in quality of content, but also when it comes to value, as this is possibly the best $15 you'll spend in your life so far due to the breadth of content and depth of gameplay you're getting. If you love RPGs or are even the slightest bit curious about this, then you should absolutely play Child of Light. It's far and away one of the best games not only this year, but of the generation. Pros + Amazing visuals and fairytale aesthetic brought to life by UbiART Framework + Great story and interesting use of rhyming in narrative + Battles are extremely engaging and fun + Great value; $15 for deep gameplay and 15+ hours of content Cons Battles, especially boss fights can become predictable in nature Overall Score: 10 (out of 10) Masterful Child of Light is breathtaking to behold and brilliant to play.   7. Dragon Age: Inquisition will launch on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One October 7 in the US and October 10 in Europe! Inquisition will be the third in the series and the first on next gen consoles. According to the game's official website, those who pre-order the game will also get the Flames of the Inquisition DLC pack. Developer: Telltale Games Publisher: Telltale Games Platforms: PC, PS3, Xbox 360, OSX (PS Vita and iOS coming at a later date) Release Date: April 8, 2014 Rating: M for Mature Note: As this is the halfway point in the story, some spoilers are discussed in this review We're finally at the halfway point in the The Wolf Among Us, and by now, most stories usually give the audience a good idea of where the plot is heading. While Episode 2 was still a solid episode, this was one aspect that it failed at as the whole episode just felt more like a sub-plot then it was actually advancing the story, at least until the end. Fortunately, Episode 3 picks up the pieces and manages to do something interesting with them, all the while introducing some new characters that shake up the situation a bit. Episode 3: A Crooked Mile begins with the fallout over the revelation about Crane that was revealed at the end of Episode 2, leaving Bigby determined to track him down for answers. The evidence discovered against Crane so far is pretty convincing, and he feels the need to let Snow White know at once; however she's already tied up with another matter tied to the previous episode; the timing of which couldn't be worse due to what's going on. Adding to the fuel on the fire is the fact that with Crane having disappeared, Fabletown is now without proper leadership, a fact that Bluebeard points out when he barges in on Bigby and Snow in the middle of their investigation in the Town Hall. Bluebeard's insistence on helping with the case throws a figurative wrench into the gears as Bigby and Snow can't be certain of his intentions and if he has ulterior motives in all of this. Unfortunately, they're left no choice but to agree to his inclusion on the matters and the three are left to investigate Crane's apartment, what the Brothers Tweedle are up to, and who Crane's black market glamour supplier is. There are some intriguing moments throughout that especially stand out, such as two separate instances that have Bigby dealing with a person that is under the influence of medication and/or alcohol. Naturally, the way you respond is crucial since someone without their full thinking faculties is more opt to make rash decisions, and interestingly enough, you can play along with their delusions and game their expectations to further your cause. The moment with Holly in particular is an interesting one, as you come to learn a little about the relationship between her, The Woodsman, and her sister, Lily. Some of the decisions Bigby must decide in this episode feel like they have a lot more weight given to them as well, with at least two of them seeming like they may have major ramifications down the road depending on your decision. The conclusion to this episode is also much more well done than the previous two. Whereas the first two episodes went more for quick shock value, Episode 3 presents a more organic ending by introducing new characters that quickly establish themselves as a major threat and dish out consequences for the actions that take place. By the time the credits roll, the plot escalates immensely, not because of shock value, but because a true villain is finally established. And with the underlying themes of poverty, gradualism, racism, and such being discussed, combined with the fact of a larger conspiracy going on, the next two episodes look to pay off in a big way. If there's one thing that's unfortunate about Episode 3, it's that the gameplay itself still doesn't quite live up to what was presented in the first episode. It's still very much a linear affair, with you only having to click on most of what's on the screen in order to proceed, though there are a few action scenes, especially one important one at the end that triggers a major decision you'll need to make. Still, it's a shame there isn't more actual detective work and deducing that happens, like when Bigby cross-examined Mr. Toad's story in Episode 1. After a slightly faltering second chapter, Episode 3: A Crooked Mile really picks up the plot once again and sets it on the path that it needs to be going down. Things are continuing to be built upon - characters, themes, and the plot, and it feels like things are continually moving. It still doesn't quite live up to the highs of the first episode, but it's a great continuation in its own right with plenty to take away from and leaves you excited for the remaining two episodes. Pros + Story pacing is much better this time around + Developments that occur are more interesting and feel like they're going somewhere + Ending does a great job of setting up the final two episodes Cons - Still not a whole lot of investigation/puzzle solving and such Overall Score: 8.5 (out of 10) Great Episode 3: A Crooked Mile is a return to form for The Wolf Among Us. Its developments mark a significant part of the story and will leave you hungry for more. Disclosure: This game was reviewed using downloadable Steam code provided by the publisher.

The Xbox 360 version of Titanfall only just released recently and is getting good reviews for being a great port of the Xbox One version, but if you're looking to pick it up for 360, you're going to have to grab it at retail. In a statement made on their site, EA explained exactly why the Xbox 360 version would not be made available for purchase on Xbox Live's Games On Demand service. "After extensive testing, we felt that it simply did not represent the true Titanfall experience and it was decided not to release a Games on Demand version. As we never officially announced that Titanfall would be available via Games on Demand and the option to purchase it that way should have never been offered. We hope players understand this decision was all about quality and making sure you get the best Titanfall experience."   10. While Vita fans are still waiting for the handheld release of Borderlands 2, Gearbox has announced another game in the series in the meantime, and it isn't Borderlands 3. Instead, it's an interquel called Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and it takes place between the first and second Borderlands games. The Pre-Sequel will introduce four new classes to play as in addition to fighting alongside Handsome Jack and witnessing his rise to becoming a tyrant along with the Hyperion Corporation. Another new aspect of the game will be low-gravity and oxygen-powered combat. Also, the four characters corresponding to the new classes should be familiar to Borderlands veterans; you'll have the opportunity to play as: Athena, the Gladiator - first seen in The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC for the original Borderlands Wilhelm, the Enforcer - previously a boss in BL2 Nisha, the Lawbringer - The Sheriff of Lynchwood from BL2 Claptrap, the Fragtrap - The goofy robot companion from BL2 That's most of what is being shared about the game at this moment, but Gearbox has confirmed that they are working on the title in conjunction with 2K Australia. More information will be revealed in the coming months, but for now, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is planned for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC later this year.   11. If you're looking forward to the next episode of The Wolf Among Us, the good news is you won't have to wait long! Episode 3, subtitled "A Crooked Mile" is officially slated for release on April 8th for PC/Mac (worldwide) and PS3 in North America, and on April 9th for Xbox 360 (worldwide) and PS3 in Europe. Telltale also mentions the iOS version is coming next week as well. A Crooked Mile looks to be the first episode where Bigby fully loses control and takes on his more wolf-like appearance if the trailer is anything to go by.   12. Today SEGA announced when we can expect to see the upcoming Alien: Isolation release in stores: October 7th, 2014. Developed by Creative Assembly (best known as the developer of the Total War series), Alien: Isolation is a first-person survival horror game that looks to recreate the sense of fear and dread from Ridley Scott's classic movie, Alien. You'll need to scavenge resources and improvise solutions all the while trying to stay alive amidst being stalked by a blood-thirsty xenomorph. Will this game rise above the disappointment that was 2012's Aliens: Colonial Marines? Early previews are pretty positive so far, so we'll have to wait and see. Maybe, just maybe this is the Alien game fans have been waiting for. Alien: Isolation will release on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, and PC. Are you excited for Alien: Isolation?
  13. If you don't have an Xbox One and aren't a PC gamer but have been waiting with bated breath for Titanfall on Xbox 360, it looks like you'll be waiting just a little longer to play it. Originally scheduled to launch next week on the 25th, the Xbox 360 port will now be coming on April 8 in North America and April 11 in Europe. The reason for the delay? EA wants to give Bluepoint Games (which is handling the port) a bit more time to make it a better experience for Xbox 360 players according to EA executive Patrick Soderlund. In the meantime, the 360 port of Titanfall is confirmed to feature the same 6v6 gameplay, maps, modes, weapons, and burn cards as the Xbox One and PC versions. Will you be buying the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall?

So the newest generation of home console gaming has finally finished arriving, and while the previous generation of home consoles is still on its way out, now“s a good time for us to look back at all the good it brought to our expensive hobby. All generations have their perks, and the generation in question is certainly no exception (try saying that five times fast). We had some pretty awesome technical improvements over the generation prior, whether in the form of experimental controls or a stronger focus on that thing we call “teh internetz,†and we even had some lesser-known developers rise to the challenge and provide us with some rather stellar works of art. And if I were to sit down and create a list of my top 5 favorite achievements from last generation… well, it might (and does) look something like this: #5 Motion Controls (When Done Well) Love it or hate it, motion controls happened. And while plenty of games made it look more like a gimmick and less like something that could actually enhance gameplay in any possible way, there were also games that managed to pull it off beautifully. An easy example would be first-person shooters. Well, some of them. And then there was the Wii port of the critically acclaimed survival horror title Resident Evil 4, which is what I would consider the definitive version of the game. With something as simple as pointing the controller at the screen to aim your guns, even before the days of Wii Motion Plus and PlayStation Move (sorry Kinect), it just worked. But shooters aren“t the only games that pulled off motion controls without ruining everything. Maybe it took a while to see anything truly awe-inspiring, but we were eventually introduced to Wii Motion Plus and PlayStation Move, which finally gave us the ability to swing swords ”n“ such more realistically. This, of course, allowed games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword to have the fluid controls they had. …Oh, don“t look at me like that! Those controls worked flawlessly for me, so you can be quiet! Look, the point is that motion controls aren“t all bad. Plenty of games pulled it off very well, which is why I have it on this list. #4 Advancement in Online Multiplayer Ah, I remember the days… sitting around my house playing Mario Party with my brothers as we called each other cheaters when someone else won a minigame… good times. But while playing with multiple people on the same console is loads of fun and all, it“s also very restricting since, well, everyone has to be in the same physical area at the same time to engage in multiplayer. All that changed, however, when some company created an attachment for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo known as XBAND, and then later when Sega created their NetLink attachment for the Sega Saturn, and then even later when Sega included a built-in modem for the Dreamcast. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox also had online functionality, and there was a modem attachment for the GameCube, though online multiplayer didn“t really take off until the following generation. I“m talking consoles, mind you, so don“t give me that “PC master race†nonsense. And boy, did it take off. Last generation, online multiplayer became so huge that as we“re making the 8th generation transition, always-online DRM is now a problem amongst gamers. If you followed the PS4“s and Xbox One“s earlier announcements, you know what I mean. Of course, when it“s something simple, allowing us all to connect to each other over the net and playing together (with some profanity involved here and there), it“s an amazing thing. And of course it is. Otherwise it wouldn“t be on this list. #3 YouTube With all the YouTube we all watch (don“t kid yourself, you watch it), it“s hard to believe that it didn“t exist prior to February 14th, 2005. Wait, it was founded on Valentine“s Day? Huh… anyway, with its inception, YouTube opened up a new world of possibilities for gamers. Egoraptor, JonTron, PewDiePie… The YouTube gamer celebrities you might know and love were far from where they are today back before the 7th generation began. Did you know that, out of the top 100 YouTube channels, 16 of them are gaming channels? That“s a lot when you eliminate all the VEVO channels and channels that belong to things like NBA, Red Bull, and even YouTube themselves. Hell, PewDiePie alone sits comfortably at #1. Did you get that? The #1 channel on YouTube is currently a gaming channel. Yeah, you can see where I“m coming from. So whenever you watch the newest episode of JonTron, rewatch PokéAwesome for the hundredth time, or watch PewDiePie exaggerate his fear scream at another horror game, remember: none of this was around until the last generation of home consoles arrived. And so on the list you go, YouTube! Even if you are a little out-of-place compared to the others. #2 PlayStation 3 (A Little Later in Its Life) Fanboy or not, there are countless gamers around the world who will tell you about how much they love their PlayStation 3. The games are awesome, the online service is fantastic, its Blu-ray feature is incredibly convenient; there“s a lot of good to be said about Sony“s third home console. Of course, it took some time to get to the level of success it“s at today, but once it finally hit its stride, it became one of the greatest things ever for gamers. Before I get to the good, let“s take a brief look back at how this phoenix handled its earlier life before rising from its ashes. Do you remember? The PS3 was once an overpriced machine with next to nothing to play on it, and it didn“t sell very well at all. In fact, the internet had its fair share of memes dedicated to the console“s lack of games. Needless to say, the magic of the PS2 pretty much vanished once its predecessor was released. Of course, this phoenix indeed rose from all that and Sony found its spark once again. Sure, it never reached PS2 levels of success, but now it has some of the greatest games of the generation, many of which are available via PSN, which is another one of the PS3“s perks. As much as I love Nintendo and tolerate Microsoft, Sony definitely made me happy last generation, which is a valid enough reason to add their creation to this thing you“re reading. #1 The Rise of Indie Games And now we reach the top dog in all this. I thought long and hard about my favorite thing of last generation and, in the end, I couldn“t help but feel that indie games deserved it. We“ve had plenty of indies in the past, but it wasn“t until the 7th generation of home consoles that we were able to play them on the big screen. At least not like we do today. Thanks to the likes of Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA), PlayStation Network (PSN), and WiiWare (no abbreviation), our home consoles received so many fantastic independent games that I just can“t help but consider last generation the “Rise of Indie Games.†Seriously, have you played any of these indies? Last-gen gave us Journey, Flower, Bastion, Limbo, Braid, Fez, Mark of the Ninja, Spelunky, World of Goo, and so many other great games that were great without being from a triple-A developer/publisher. Many even considered Journey to be their game of the year in 2012. It“s pretty apparent by now that we have tons of extremely talented game developers out in the world who aren“t as well-known as Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, or Square Enix. And you know what? I couldn“t be happier that all this talent are making names for themselves. They deserve success, and it“s great to see that gaming has gotten to the point where creative minds can find success without as many restrictions as we“ve had in the past. And having sites like Kickstarter and Indigogo definitely helps. Indie games deserve my #1 slot of the best things of last generation, hands down.   15. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate was originally a tie-in game that released on handhelds in conjunction with Batman: Arkham Origins' releason on consoles last Fall, and now Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that the previously Vita and 3DS-only title is heading to consoles as well courtesy of Armature Studio. Dubbed Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Deluxe Edition, it will deliver the same story and gameplay experience but in HD this time. Update: An Activision representative confirmed to Gamespot that developer Edge of Reality would be handling development and that the game will merge the universe High Moon Studios created with the universe Michael Bay created in the recent films. Original Story: A trailer shown at the American International Toy Fair this weekend revealed that a new Activision-published Transfomers game is slated for release in 2014 - Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. There's no word if it's tied to High Moon Studios' recent Transformers games (the last one being Transformers: Fall of Cybertron in 2012), but the plot looks to be split between choosing to play as the Autobots or Decepticons and either saving the world or destroying it. No word on which developer is handling the title just yet either. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is slated for release sometime in 2014 on Xbox One, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3, 3DS, and PC. Another game in the series, Transformers Universe, which is a free-to-play browser game is also being prepped for release this summer to coincide with the film release of Transformers: Age of Extinction.     The Greatest Generation of Gaming?

    With the newest consoles having been released by November of 2013, the latest generation of gaming is now in full swing. There is a lot of talk about how each system does not have standout games, but rest assured, those games are being made. But the new generation has just started, and while the last one is still going, it“s a good time to look back and see what it accomplished. There was a lot that happened in this generation of gaming. And in order to bring the whole thing into perspective, we have to go back to 2005… Microsoft, during a conference, had introduced HD TVs. The point of those HD TVs was that the next gaming console, the Xbox 360, was to be compatible with HD picture quality, in order to bring a whole new experience. In order to do that, you had to buy a TV that had the capability to do so. The Xbox 360 eventually came in a slim model. During E3 of that year, Sony“s and Nintendo“s hands were forced and they unveiled their respective new machines. While Sony showed a more traditional mock-up, Nintendo, being Nintendo, had their president pull out their mock up out of his jacket pocket. The machine, codenamed the Nintendo Revolution, had been revealed. However, everything presented had been just promises, and dreams. No one had made any of the dreams a reality…yet. Microsoft released the Xbox 360 in November of 2005. It was the first of the three new consoles to be released. With a year head start it was allowed to set up some industry standards: HD graphics, which was promised earlier. Eventually it would bring the advent of streaming media to and from a video game console as Youtube grew in popularity. It sold very well, and was a bit more stable compared to Sony“s Playstation 3 during the beginning of its life. While it was plagued with the infamous “red ring of deathâ€, Microsoft“s bad customer service regarding fixing the console, and only a 20GB hard drive when it was first released, it was a working system beyond the fear of the red ring of death. Come 2006, Sony and Nintendo were ready to place their respective machines on the market. Sony“s Playstation 3 was incredibly powerful. It was not just a gaming console, but also a Blu-Ray player, and it was backward compatible! (At first) Sony had catered to various markets, (some people bought it solely for blu-ray) but it was one expensive box for most consumers. Released at a whopping $600, the Playstation 3 struggled. It was hard to develop for, and the PS2 emulation was causing glitches, which caused Sony to re-develop the PS3 and take out the backward compatibility. Remember the original "fat" model? Nintendo on the other hand, TOOK THE WORLD BY STORM. Nintendo managed to create yet another new control scheme: Motion control! This controller allowed people to play by actually moving the controller, and was a lot more intuitive to those who were not gamers. Nintendo combined the new control scheme with an easy to play game, Wii Sports. Everything you needed to do in that game was swing the wii remote. It was easy to play and easy to get into. Combine the other two elements with a marketing scheme that showed the entire family playing video games, and the end result was exactly as advertised! Wiis were flying off the shelves, and everyone was playing Wii Sports. The Wii was the cheapest system as well, at $250. (Compared to the Xbox 360 at $300 or $400 depending on the model, and the PS3 for $500 or $600 depending on the model) I specifically remember going to a store and hearing that since Wiis were so popular, the store could only sell 1 per customer. One last thing the Wii did to destroy the other two was to bring the past to the present, with the Virtual Console. Gaming was entering its seventh generation, and there were people who had fond memories of games and systems of old. Now you could play your old games on a new system, and not go through the hassle of buying said old system, a compatible tv, controllers, etc. That“s right, games from Sega Genesis, NES, SNES, Sega Saturn, N64, and more could all be on that sweet little Wii. Oh, and it was backwards compatible with the Gamecube too. You still needed a Gamecube controller and memory card, but the controller would work with those N64, or SNES games too. The game changers And so, the seventh generation of gaming had begun. But the grass was not necessarily greener on the other side. The Red Ring of Death for Xbox 360, the glitchy compatibility and hefty price for the PS3, and the breaking of numerous TVs because of weak Wii straps, all caused the respective companies to release new models very early on in the lifespan of the consoles. Microsoft soon released an “elite†model, which contained a 120GB hard drive and an HDMI cable, in 2007. The Playstation 3 did away with PS2 compatibility in favor for more hard drive space. (came in 20GB, 60GB, and a few 80GB models) The Wii didn“t change at all, and in fact just reinforced the strength of the Wii remote straps. Then everything slowed down and stabilized a little. Streaming media such as Netflix came (Xbox 360 got it first in 2008). People got more comfortable with the technology, and the expected newer models came out. Xbox 360 had the Xbox Live Arcade, and the Playstation 3 got the Playstation store, both online stores to buy games digitally.(basically the respective systems“ versions of the Wii“s Virtual Console). Micro transactions soon became popular, and so did downloadable content. Was this the greatest generation of gaming? That question is a matter of opinion. It was however, the most impactful generation of gaming. There are too many milestones to count. There were many early faults, and then fan anger against the changing marketplace as everything went digital. There was the copying of the Wii motion controls by Microsoft and Sony, only for those to flop. Despite all of that, this gaming generation was a fun ride.
  18. Child of Light, which was first revealed at Ubisoft's E3 2013 Press Conference, is the company's next game to utilize their UbiArt Framework engine, and boy does it look gorgeous. You might recall that UbiArt Framework was the engine that was previously used to design both Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. In any case, Child of Light is inspired by Japanese RPGs and will be turn-based as evidenced by the trailer. However, the gameplay is said to be more akin to a side-scroller with RPG elements, similar to something like Muramasa or Odin Sphere (but with a battle system more like Final Fantasy's Active Time Battle system). Ubisoft announced that the game will be priced at $14.99 and will be releasing on PS3 and PS4 (via PSN), Xbox 360 and Xbox One (via Xbox Live), Wii U (via eShop), and PC (via Steam) on April 30, so mark your calendars, RPG fans. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is just a little less than a month away from release at this point, and Square Enix is looking to whet fans' appetites not only with a new demo out this week, but also a new trailer that looks at the evolution of the battle system in this final part of the trilogy. Unlike the previous two installments of Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning Returns' battle mode is a solo venture, making it somewhat more action-oriented in turn. You'll need to initiate special tactics, such as staggering the enemy through certain combinations, and know when to guard or evade if you hope to defeat enemies as you progress. Take a look at the trailer below to see what I mean. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 on February 11.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare was one of the more surprising announcements to be made during EA's E3 press conference this year, with its focus on third person shooting action blended with the usual tower defense gameplay, and today Popcap has announced a release date for the title. The game offers more than 10 maps and three different modes which include 12v12 competitive multiplayer modes known as "Gardens & Graveyards" and "Team Vanquish," along with a four-player co-op mode known as "Garden Ops." Xbox One will receive two extra modes: one that's local co-op with splitscreen, and one that serves as a Boss mode in which you can use Kinect or a SmartGlass device to give you a top-down view of the battlefield and support your teammates in other gameplay modes with intel, health drops, revive stations, and artillery strikes. You won't have to wait too much longer to play it either. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is slated to launch at retail and through Origin on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on February 20, 2014 for $39.99. A PC version will also be available at a later date.
