    "To celebrate the sale of 20 million PlayStation 2 consoles, Sony unveiled limited edition color (alleged to be 666 of each) systems at the 2000 Tokyo Game Show. Labeled "The 2001 European Automobile Collection", these systems can be found in "super red", "metallic silver", "astral blue", "snow white", and "light yellow". The case, controller, and system stand are the only unique items in this otherwise stock PS2."
  7. Good news, Sega fans. Cult classic graffiti skater Jet Set Radio has now officially been priced and given a release date in North America and Europe. First up, the price will be an extremely reasonable $9.99 across all four platforms (360,PS3,PC, and Vita). As for the release dates, it'll arrive on PSN first, with PS Plus users getting access to the game a whole week earlier on September 11. Non-PS Plus members will then get their chance to purchase it on September 18. XBLA and Steam users come next on September 19, and then finally Vita owners will get their mitts on the game on October 16. It's great to see Sega revive some of their older IPs like this, even if it is just an HD remake. Perhaps if it performs well in sales, we might see another entry in the series after so long? You never know! Are you planning on buying Jet Set Radio?
  8. Arkedo and SEGA's extremely chaotic and quirky platformer, Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, has finally received a release date. North Americans will be able to get their chance to play as Ash, the prince of hell, on September 25th for PlayStation Network, September 26th for Xbox LIVE Arcade, and October 3rd for PC digital download. Prices are $15/1200MSP/$15, respectively. As for our fellow Europeans, they'll be able to download the game on all three platforms on October 3rd. For those unable to wait for Hell Yeah! and other upcoming SEGA games, you can get a taste of them during the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington from August 31st to September 2nd. As for everyone else, here's a new trailer of Hell Yeah! from SEGA to tide you over. It shows off all the raunchy and crazy action the game has and all of the customization you can do.
  9. I've written about publicity stunts going awry before, but at the very least they were one-off things that not everyone had a chance of seeing. But when you have an entire ad campaign based around one or two bad ideas, there's a good chance that everyone will see them and collectively laugh you out of existence. Trust me though - the advertisements I'm going to be discussing beyond this point get bad. Really bad. The paint will peel off of your walls just to get away from how awful they are. While we might all agree that they're just plain awful, you have to remember there are dozens of people who think these are good ideas. We have to thank them for things like... --------------- Sony Takes The 'Scare People' Approach We'll start off with a classic ad campaign from this generation. What was Sony to do after all the bad press they got from the Playstation 3's original retail pricing in 2006? Make an ad campaign so terrifying that people would just up and forget about the prices out of fear for their very lives. It didn't work, but it was still freaky. Buy the PS3 or we'll run these ads indefinitely. I can't even begin to imagine how the brainstorming session might have gone behind the walls of one of Sony's many studios. I imagine that they were hoping people would consider them very artistic and bold to make such off the wall ads. They must have thought consumers would want a mature artsy console to play on and would flock to stores. Instead, what they got were floods of people going on to message boards asking why that baby doll was crying, or why Sony was trying to traumatize random children with their campaign of terror. The advertisements lasted a pretty good amount of time before they were replaced with much better ads featuring montages of different games that were releasing soon. --------------- The "Banned" Xbox Shooter Advertisement While the live action shooter commercial for the Xbox 360 wasn't inherently ridiculous, it wasn't exactly a good commercial either. There were no snippets of gameplay for any game whatsoever, no games were mentioned during the entire advert, and the only connection it had to the console was the Xbox 360 logo at the end. Eight people died while filming this [citation needed] While I've heard that the commercial was more about the Xbox 360's online functionality, it still doesn't make sense to me. People weren't buying the Xbox 360 so they could be connected to the internet. They were buying the Xbox 360 to play games online. So now people knew the Xbox 360 had online, but they didn't know about any games. But the really ridiculous thing about this advertisement was the fact that it never made it to any air waves. The reason as to why it never aired is still a mystery, but rumors were all over the place. Some people said it was because it was too violent, others said it wasn't approved, and even a few people claimed Microsoft pulled it to cause a stir. Whatever the real reason was, it is just ridiculous that so much controversy was stirred up over a commercial that had absolutely zero gameplay attached to it. --------------- Red Steel Was Just A Big Lie I'm sure you all remember when the Wii was first revealed to the world. It was pretty awesome for everybody involved. But there was one game that stood out above all the others at Nintendo's conference that year. That game of course, was Red Steel. Hurry up! I have to go be Kill Bill in five minutes. The trailer and commercials shown for the game made it look like the Wii's big killer app, this was going to be the game that put Wiis in people's homes. It had nice graphics for the Wii at the time, what appeared to be some pretty great AI, and of course the sword fighting. Fast forward to the Wii's release and we learn the horrible truth. Red Steel sucked. The graphics weren't as well done as what we saw at E3, the AI liked to stand in the line of fire whenever able and the sword fighting was just... Don't even get me started. Eventually Red Steel 2 released with 1:1 sword fighting implemented, but it was too little too late. --------------- The Past Of Advertisements Isn't Any Better While the three mentioned above happened just in the last few years and even a bit into the future, you should know that the past of video game advertisements wasn't any better. In fact, it was a whole lot worse. Back in the 80's and 90's the trend was the more radical you were, the better. Game companies took this to heart and came up with the worst ads I've ever seen. Now, I understand the image. But none of the text makes any sense at all. SEGA was especially guilty of these horrifically terrible advertisements. There was a time where SEGA just figured everyone wanted to pretend they were masturbating a robot and went from there. Why they did this, I can't possibly understand. But I've got the ads posted above and below just so you can look on in astonishment at how bad they really were. This ad would take an even worse turn if he was holding a DS. This isn't anything like the Segata Sanshiro ad campaign that took Japan by surprise. If anything, it just makes me want to avoid ever touching another SEGA product for the rest of my life in the fear that I might actually be pleasuring some sort of robot hidden in my console. Hey, it could totally happen. --------------- I'll never understand it. Companies can and will throw millions of dollars into ad campaigns that any regular person would call out as being insane at a moment's notice. Why do these ideas even make it past the drawing board? Why did they ever hit our TV screens? Sometimes these things just become too expensive to fail. But at least we can rest easy knowing they don't last forever, As always, thank you for reading. Developer: Sega, Xeen Publisher: Sega Platform: Nintendo 3DS Release Date: July 10, 2012 ESRB: E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older Lurking in the shadows, just a week behind the more anticipated rhythm game Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, lays a cunning thief… Rhythm Thief. Phantom R and his game almost became ghosts here in the states, too, with repeated delays and the Sega layoffs in March. It“s been a long, hard road, but Rhythm Thief & the Emperor“s Treasure was finally able to make its grand debut. And how very grand the game itself is. This seemingly unassuming rhythm game is chock-full of old-school Sega charm, and will grab hold of your attention and heart. Rhythm Thief takes place in the beautiful city of Paris, France. Our protagonist, Raphael, leads a double life as an art thief named Phantom R (his motives for stealing and later returning art are explained later on in the story). When pursuing his father, who left him when Raphael was a small child, he finds a bracelet with the same symbol as the coin that his father left him has. Soon enough, he becomes entangled with a girl named Marie, whose violin also carries that same symbol. The two young Parisians are then chased by a man claiming to be a resurrected Napoleon Bonaparte, who is seeking to rule Paris and the world with an artifact called the Dragon Crown. Raphael and his trusty canine sidekick, Fondue, work together to stop Napoleon and his cohorts; doing so to music and rhythm. Obviously, with all of that, Rhythm Thief doesn“t focus completely on being a rhythm game. There“s plenty of adventuring and moving around maps. There are even puzzle elements, though they are very simplistic and could have definitely used some more attention. Not to mention, on top of all of this, an engrossing and in-depth story that is certain to grab those that are not familiar with the rhythm genre. The game seems to take many notes from the Professor Layton series. The art style, animation, and poking around at every part of the screen for medals (instead of coins) make that very evident. Though, at the same time, Rhythm Thief puts its own spin on things and exudes a unique charm that doesn“t make it feel like a copy-cat. In any case, let“s stop rambling and talk about the main part: the gameplay! Rhythm Thief is the most fun I“ve had with a rhythm game in a long time. Sega and Xeen really put a lot of effort to make use of the 3DS“s properties and create a unique rhythm game. It“s not just tapping the screen or pressing buttons the whole time. Most of the rhythm minigames are presented in varying manners and are different from each other. In a way, it feels like a Rhythm Heaven game. Rhythm Thief even incorporates the 3DS“s gyroscope in order to make use of tilting and such in some of the rhythm minigames. It was completely unexpected when the first one that did make use of it popped up for me, but very fun (however, it could sometimes be unresponsive). Another one of my particular favorite set of minigames have you drag the stylus left and right to play Marie“s violin, presented in a way that feels similar to Guitar Hero. For the minigames, there is much help offered to those who need it and this is completely optional. Such help includes a “guide†which is usually an icon on the screen that indicates when a button needs to be pressed or stylus needs to be swiped. You can also buy items with your medals to make things easier - or more challenging!. The instructions presented before a minigame (and some puzzles) is started can sometimes be unclear, however. There was one in particular where I had absolutely no idea what was going on or what to do (it“s R31; be wary!). One of my favorite parts about Rhythm Thief is that some rhythm minigames are even themed around other Sega rhythm franchises like Space Channel 5 and Samba De Amigo. Playing a minigame that feels just like Space Channel 5, where you try to imitate the opponent“s moves, and seeing Phantom R go “chu, chu, chu!†is a real treat for those that are fans of the game. Rhythm Thief also offers bonus chapters at the end of the game, depending on whether you qualify for them or not. Finishing the “Master Instrument†and finding all the Phantom Notes are two such side-quests that need to be done to open up these new story branches. Only the most masterful rhythm thief will be able to do this, though. A lot of the sounds needed for the Master Instrument and collecting some Phantom Notes can no longer be done if you happen to miss them at a certain place at a certain time. Perhaps the most difficult chapter to unlock, however, requires you to get an “A†rank in every rhythm minigame. All of this provides a great incentive for completionists and those looking for a challenge. The gameplay of Rhythm Thief isn“t all that“s fantastic about it. The tracks used in and out of the rhythm minigames are pretty great, as they should be, and do a wonderful job of setting the mood. My absolute favorite piece of music from the game is titled “Moon Princessâ€. It“s incredibly emotional and memorable. As for voice-acting, it“s pretty nice aside from a few laughable French accents here and there. However, a noticeable problem throughout the game is that sometimes the written dialogue doesn“t match what is being audibly said. I wish a bit more attention had gone into that. The animated cutscenes are gorgeous and surprisingly well done (especially in 3D). They certainly rival the ones present in the Professor Layton series, Rhythm Thief“s probable inspiration. The scenery of Paris and other parts of France come alive with vibrant colors and details in both the cutscenes and backgrounds throughout the game. There“s just so much I love about Rhythm Thief & the Emperor“s Treasure; I could go on and on about it all day. It“s an immense amount of fun and a fabulous new IP from Sega. You can tell how much love and care went into making it and I can only wish it was getting as much attention as Theatrhythm seems to be getting. Despite that, I hope it does well enough here in North America so there“s potential for a sequel (and the ending even hints towards one, too!). Rhythm Thief definitely deserves it. Second Opinion by Jason Clement Rhythm Thief caught my eye when it was initially announced and had been on my radar before it was released, but I admit I didn't expect for it to be anything more than an Elite Beat Agents clone with a story. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be much more than that, and also mixed with a bit of Professor Layton as well. The result is a game that's extremely clever in its rhythm game usage and has a charming story to boot. What surprised me the most about Rhythm Thief was just how well each rhythm game adapts to each circumstance in the story; you'll fight off enemy goons to a beat in one game, run along and hide behind differently colored statues to avoid detection in another, and play a violin in yet another one of more than 50 different types of rhythm games. And if that isn't impressive enough, the music absolutely nails it as well, as the soundtrack is incredibly catchy and left me wanting a physical collection of all of the songs. If there's anything that truly won me over though, it's the incredible quality of the animation during the cutscenes and throughout the story. Rhythm Thief has the best and most impressive animated cutscenes of any 3DS game to this point; there's no artifacting whatsoever and the frame-rate is seemless and never drops off. Add to that the wonderful cast of characters and a great story and Rhythm Thief has all of the makings of a great new potential franchise at hand. As Leah mentioned, let's hope this one sells well enough; it'll leave you hungering for that second installment by the end. And unless you absolutely hate rhythm games or don't own a 3DS, Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure should absolutely be on your radar as it's one of the best examples of a game that was built from the ground-up for the 3DS and succeeds because of it. Pros: + Innovative and fun rhythm minigames that make full use of the features the 3DS has to offer, such as the gyroscope + Offers adventure and puzzle elements on top of the main rhythm portion of the game + Tributes to other Sega rhythm games like Space Channel 5 and Samba De Amigo + Animated cutscenes and soundtrack are absolutely gorgeous Cons: - Directions before you start rhythm minigames are sometimes vague and unclear - In many instances, written dialogue does not match what is being audibly said Overall Score: 9 (out of 10) Fantastic Rhythm Thief & the Emperor“s Treasure is a masterpiece of a rhythm game. For those that are fans of the genre and those having even a tiny bit of interest, you need to pick up a copy of this Sega title right away.
  11. Sega has released its first trailer for Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition, and it basically looks like you'd expect. This trailer has no real surprises for anyone familiar with HD collections. It's a pretty long trailer, though, clocking in at just under four minutes. Viewers can see the updated graphics and, while it still looks more or less like PlayStation 2 game, there's a buffing and polishing around the edges that round things out and make the surfaces a little crisper. Don't believe me? Check out the image below (also the header) to see a comparison between the HD remake and the original game. This is only the most recent of the influx of games getting HD collections, with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection coming out last year on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and just recently on the PlayStation Vita, as well as Devil May Cry and Shadow of the Colossus and Ico. This particular one will be hitting the Japanese PlayStation 3s on November 1st of this year. In the US of A? Your guess is as good as mine, but we'll probably see it after not too long. But you came here for the trailer, didn't you? Aw gosh, you know I can't say no to you, you rascal!
  12. Sega has announced that Ralph (from the upcoming Wreck-It-Ralph animated film) will be a playable character in the upcoming Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed this Fall. And in light of this news, it looks like more of the behind-the-scenes deals to include certain video game characters in the film is now coming to light. Just as Nintendo may have let Disney include Bowser as a cameo in the film in order to secure the video game adaptation for Nintendo platforms, it seems that Sega may have let them use Eggman in the film in order to secure Ralph as a playable character in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Crossovers - don't you just love 'em? In any case, Ralph is one of a few cameo characters that are slated to appear in the game, along with Danica Patrick who was somehow announced to be playable in-game as well. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is set to launch on 360, PS3, Vita, 3DS, and PC later this Fall.

    Sonic Adventure 2 HD is Official

    Not too long ago, it was rumored that an HD remastered version of Sonic Adventure 2 would be released on Xbox Live Arcade in October. The posting on Xbox.com was quickly taken down after being placed, but it seems that the game wasn't a lie. SEGA has officially announced that Sonic Adventure 2 HD will indeed be released on XBLA, as well as PlayStation Network. The official announcement was made at SEGA's own Sonic Boom event during Comic-Con. And pretty few people were actually expecting such an announcement since the initial rumor had reasons for people to be skeptical (namely the fact that the listing for it was taken down before 99% of the world could even see it for themselves). But disregarding everyone's expectations, the HD adventure is official. SEGA has been initiating something called SEGA Heritage, and as part of that they have decided to bring the Dreamcast game into the HD realm this Fall. When the game was originally released back in 2001, the game got plenty of fantastic reviews, and an updated version was even released for the Nintendo GameCube. And with Sonic Adventure having been released on XBLA to celebrate the Dreamcast's 11th birthday, it's about time Sonic Adventure 2 followed suit (and in HD, no less). Are you a fan of the original Sonic Adventure 2? Are you excited about this HD remake?
  14. NiGHTS into dreams... was a quirky little Sega Saturn game released 16 years ago. Those who never got the chance to play it would have to do a lot of hunting in order to get the console and game. It did end up receiving a sequel on the Nintendo Wii, but many fans claimed it held no candle to the original. Sega is making it a bit easier and cheaper for us by creating an HD re-release as a digital download for PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Arcade, and Windows (presumably, Steam). Along with its updated graphics, this HD version of NiGHTS contains a 16:9 aspect ratio, leaderboards, achievements/trophies, and an optional Saturn mode that allows those seeking nostalgia to play with the original graphics. Sega has also released a trailer for the NiGHTS into dreams... HD re-release. Watch it below and see how it looks! Did you ever get to play NiGHTS into dreams... on the Sega Saturn?     Project X Zone Trailer

    I hadn't seen this until earlier when Blazeknyt showed it to me, but here's a Japanese trailer for the mega-crossover known as Project X Zone. Normally, I would make an article for something like this, but since it's Japanese-only and there's no word on whether it'll make it to the US, so I thought I'd post it in the forums. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nintendo-direct-project-x/729446 What do you guys think? It actually looks a lot cooler than I thought it would; the screenshots definitely don't do it justice. Watching it just kinda drove home the fact that it'll probably never get released in the US since it'd be a publishing nightmare.
