Jason Clement posted a article in Industry NewsSony's God of War series and Microsoft's Gears of War series have been powerhouse franchises for each company, with titles in each regularly selling in the millions. Unfortunately, though, it's looking as if the latest entries in each franchise are going to disappoint in the end, sales-wise. According to analyst firm Cowen and Company, they've estimated that Gears of War: Judgment has sold 425,000 in March compared to the 2 million+ sales for Gears of War 3 when it released in September 2011. As for God of War: Ascension, Cowen and Company's sales estimate comes in at 360,000, whereas its predecessor, God of War III, sold some 1.1 million units just three years ago in March 2010. Percentage-wise, Judgment saw a 78.75% loss in sales in comparison to Gears of War 3's first month sales (if going strictly by the 2 million figure), while Ascension saw a 67.28% loss when compared to God of War III's first month sales. "We had expected sales trends to improve in March due to a strong core line-up," wrote Cowen and Company. "Two historically strong franchises appear to have significantly underperformed." The loss in sales is pretty surprising given that each series had consistently produced big sales up until these recent entries. Some have speculated that it could be due to brand fatigue, poor advertising, console fatigue (from this generation running on longer than in the past), or all of the above. Sony even bundled God of War: Ascension with a special red PS3 as a promotion for the game, but it looks as if that didn't have a huge effect on sales. In the meantime, it'll be interesting to see how Microsoft and Sony react to this news, and whether it impacts their release schedule strategy for future games in their respective series.
