Humble Bundle has been acquired by IGN

Humble Bundle, the digital game storefront primarily known for selling game bundles at pay-what-you-want tiers, has been acquired by media giant IGN as reported by Gamasutra. The official press release states that Humble Bundle will continue to operate independently with no significant changes, though it will have support from IGN in regards to accelerating growth as well as raising more charity funds. Humble co-founder John Graham and IGN executive VP Mitch Galbraith confirmed to Gamasutra that IGN has no plans to change how Humble handles business. IGN's acquisition of the storefront isn't too surprising given that the media giant could potentially add Humble Bundle incentives to its own paid IGN Prime membership, which currently gives away one free game to members each month. Whether they intend to make use of Humble Bundle in this way is yet to be seen. Source: Gamasutra What are your thoughts on IGN buying Humble Bundle?
  2. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/12/02/every-sony-owned-studio-from-worst-to-best I don't normally link to IGN articles much, but this is a pretty good one. In it, they show what each of Sony's first-party studios are, their overall ranking based on an average of their games according to their Metacritic score, and the list of games they've created (also complete with respective Metacritic scores. You might be a little surprised at who the #1 ranked studio is. I know I was.
  3. Hilarious really glad I watched it. First impressions anyone?
  4. I'm not sure how many people here keep track of IGN, but I still enjoy a few of their podcasts as well as some of their articles from time to time. Anyhow, today it was announced that Casey Lynch, the now-previous Editor-in-Chief of the site up to this point is now moving to another position, and Steve Butts, the previous Managing Editor, will now become the new Editor-in-Chief. Steve Butts also use to be the Editor-in-Chief (or was it Managing Editor?) of The Escapist for a year or two, and he's definitely a cool guy from what I've heard of him on podcasts and through his writings, so it's great to see the transition happen for him. Maybe it's just me, but I find it fascinating to keep track of different industry writers' progress and who's working where now. You can read Casey Lynch's blog post about it here, and Steve Butts' thoughts on it here. Did anyone else see the news yet? If so, what do you think? Good to hear? Don't really care?
  5. In a tumultuous start to the day for IGN, the company is undergoing layoffs with Joystiq also reporting that its sister sites - 1UP, UGO, and Gamespy - are all expected to shut down. "We are focusing on our two flagship brands, IGN and AskMen. Unfortunately, as a result, we have made the decision to close sites and restructure our teams accordingly," a company spokesperson confirmed to Joystiq. Among those affected by the IGN layoffs is Colin Campbell, the ex-Senior Features Editor. Campbell's work has been critically lauded and has won several awards over the last few years, which makes it all the more surprising to see that he was let go. This news comes not a month after IGN was purchased by Ziff Davis through its parent company j2 Global. Game Podunk wishes the best to those affected by the layoffs. Source: Joystiq, Colin Campbell

IGN Bought by Ziff Davis Media

It had been speculated for a bit now, but today things were made official about IGN and Ziff Davis Media according to a report from Bloomberg. IGN, which had previously been under News Corp., was sold off. While News Corp. was not interested in keeping IGN and all its content any longer, Ziff Davis was ready to grab the suite of sites. The transaction was somewhere under $100 million, although an exact price was not named. IGN Entertainment is comprised of more than just the IGN gaming site. Ziff Davis' purchase also includes 1UP, AskMen, GameSpy, and UGO. Now, Ziff Davis itself is a subsidiary of j2 Global who had previously been in a similar situation to IGN. Previously, they had ownership of 1UP, EGM, and UGO but were unable to stay afloat and filed for bankruptcy. That's when j2 Global swept in and their assets were sold off to News Corp. It's a bit of a muddled history, but basically, Ziff Davis is now getting back many of the properties they had once owned. With that said, we should not expect to see any of IGN's sites removed, but there may be some tweaks. Or, things may operate exactly the same and users will be completely unaware that any of this even went down. At the very least, let's hope that possible restructuring doesn't cause people to lose their jobs.
  7. So in case you hadn't heard, Jessica Chobot (one of IGN's and G4's video gals and also the voice and likeness of Diana Allers in Mass Effect 3) had spoken out against the fans who were disappointed in Mass Effect 3's ending, referring to them as "entitled gamers." It seems she's backed off from that stance a bit now as she issued an apology for what was essentially a "blanket statement" she said. I won't post it here, but things got pretty heated in the comments between Chobot and another commenter where Chobot ended up writing a huge wall of text defending herself after the commenter insinuated she got her job after "licking a PSP" (true story, btw), saying that the incident had only given her more attention instead. Anyhow, it's an interesting exchange if you want to read it here. Read the first two comments below the blog. What do you guys think? Is Chobot right with what she says? Or is the commenter (Beretzik) correct with what he's saying?

    Layoffs at IGN & 1UP

Various sources have indicated that IGN has laid off at least four staff members across IGN and 1UP today, including: Matt Leone Jack Devries Ryan Winterhalter Thierry “Scooteré Nguyen A few of them have even tweeted about it, confirming that it was their last day at IGN/1UP. Sad news for sure, and I hope they're able to recover and find new jobs quickly. Source: VG247.com
