Jonathan Higgins posted a article in NintendoAs mentioned during yesterday's Nintendo Direct, select games released on Nintendo Wii will soon be available on Wii U as digital downloads, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 leading the pack (and that's available right now). The download size of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is about 1,369 MB. But once it's on your system, it's there for keeps! Presumably, if Nintendo keeps up the pace, you could have an entire library of full retail Wii games on your Wii U system, without anymore need for switching over to Wii Mode, or what have you. Upon initial boot-up, the Wii U prompts you to pair a Wii Remote to your system if you haven't already, as the Wii Remote and sensor bar are required for some games still (like Super Mario Galaxy 2). Nintendo has said in the Direct that if a game supports the Classic Controller (like Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn or Xenoblade Chronicles, to name a few), it will be fully playable using the Wii U Gamepad. Digitally downloading Super Mario Galaxy 2 wasn't like porting a Wii Virtual Console game over to Wii U. I'm happy to report that everything is seamless; even a game's save data (assuming it exists, tucked into your Wii U console) is still intact! The Wii on Wii U digital downloads just seem to be a way to nix the need for a disc and the cumbersome Wii Mode process. Everything works like it should. So, that's that! If anyone has any questions, be sure to let me know. These downloadable games are typically available for $19.99, but during their respective launch weeks, you can purchase them for 50% off. Stay tuned for more coverage of these digital Wii games as they become available through the end of the month!
