Playtonic Games shares an update on the Switch version of Yooka-Laylee
Jason Clement posted a article in Nintendo
While Yooka-Laylee has been out on nearly every other platform since May, Playtonic Games is still hard at work on the Nintendo Switch version. What seems to be the holdup, you ask? In a new update shared on their site today, Playtonic mentioned that they've been experiencing technical difficulties with porting the game to Switch, and that they were waiting for Unity 5.6 to help clear some of them up. Unfortunately, though, the Unity update has introduced new hurdles that they're working with Unity to correct. While Playtonic says they're trying to get the game to run as well as possible before shipping it out, they do mention they're "very nearly there," and that once the issues are cleared up, then they can share the release date. It's nice to finally get word from the studio about the game considering they've been silent about it for a while, but one has to wonder if the extra time and frustration it's taken to get the Switch version working will be worth it in the end. However, a number of indie games have reported higher sales on Switch than other platforms since its debut earlier this year, so it would seem there's hope for Yooka-Laylee yet. Good news, platformer fans -- Playtonic Games has announced that development on Yooka-Laylee has officially been completed (or "gone gold" as the term goes). Generally speaking, "going gold" indicates that a game has been determined by the publisher to be good enough to be shipped to stores, but Playtonic is still sticking by their previously announced release date of April 11. Does this indicate that perhaps they'll still be working on QA testing in the meantime? We'll have to wait and see, but the early completion should give Yooka-Laylee all the time it needs to be in excellent shape for fans when it releases. Additionally, Playtonic mentioned that Kickstarter backers will be able to finalize their platform choice for the game very soon. Source: Playtonic Games Are you excited for Yooka-Laylee's release?

Yooka-Laylee gets firm release date, Wii U version cancelled
Jason Clement posted a article in Industry News
Last we've heard of Yooka-Laylee was that it was being delayed to 2017, but wipe that frown off your face because Playtonic Games has finally announced a firm release date for the game: April 11, 2017! However, on a somewhat down note, Playtonic Games also revealed that they've run into unexpected technical issues with the Wii U version, so they're cancelling that version and will instead put the game out on Nintendo Switch. No release date for the Switch version has been announced yet, so it's likely it will come later on after the game releases on other platforms. Still, there's a lot to look forward to here. Playtonic Games revealed a trailer for a brand new world called Captial Cashino, a casino-themed level that looks pretty neat. Also, anyone who pre-orders Yooka-Laylee on PS4, Xbox One, or PC will receive an instant unlock of the Toybox mode, which is a self-contained sandbox mode that serves as a preview for what to expect in the main game. In any case, you won't have to wait too much longer for the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie; after all, five months isn't that long of a time! Gamers have been waiting to hear if Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee would ever have a publisher or if the developer would be self-publishing in the end, but today we finally have an answer. Yooka-Laylee will in fact have a publisher, and it's none other than Team17! Known mostly for their work on the Worms franchise, Team17 have dipped their toes into publishing waters more recently, especially with the likes of indie titles such as The Escapists this year. Playtonic's Gavin Price had this to say on the Team17 partnership: "Team17“s 25-year industry-leading expertise will significantly benefit Yooka-Laylee in a myriad of ways, not least in expanded localisation, improved QA testing, certification and access to vastly better resources for our team. Working alongside such a strong partner will allow the Playtonic team to focus 100% of our efforts on building the best possible version of Yooka-Laylee for backers and new fans alike.†And there you have it. The deal should allow Playtonic to focus solely on Yooka-Laylee's development while leaving the rest for Team17 to handle. If everything goes to plan, this'll likely be a win-win situation for both studios. Yooka-Laylee is planned for an October 2016 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC and Mac platforms. What are your thoughts on Team17 publishing Yooka-Laylee?
