Shovel Knight is by far one of the most popular third-party characters that have been requested by fans for inclusion in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, but could such an addition actually happen? According to mounting evidence from several sources, the answer may be 'yes.' According to Nintendo Life, multiple anonymous sources with the video game retail sector have confirmed that Shovel Knight is indeed heading to Super Smash Bros. as a playable character and will receive an accompanying amiibo as well. A second hint that gives this rumor weight is the fact that Yacht Club Games has teased a megaton reveal this week that is separate from the Plague of Shadows trailer that was revealed yesterday. PAX Prime is also happening this week, and Nintendo will be throwing a big, Nindie-focused, pre-PAX show on Aug. 27 where Yacht Club will be there to discuss both Plague of Shadows and "what's next for Shovel Knight." Might this be the big Smash Bros. announcement? We'll have to wait and see, but there's certainly a possibility. Nintendo already confirmed that Lucas, the Miiverse Stage, and Splatoon costumes for Mii Fighters were all coming as Downloadable Content for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U on June 14th last week via Social Media. But today, they announced that Sakurai will be hosting a special Smash Bros-centric video presentation on that same day, at 7:40 AM PT, 10:40 ET. That“s...interesting. Will the broadcast offer more surprises beyond what we already know? I“m guessing yes. Methinks this broadcast is designed to take up a good twenty minutes or so that would have otherwise been reserved for the big Digital Event coming next Tuesday during E3 2015. What do you think will be announced? Will we see long-rumored stuff like Ryu and Roy come to light? And it begs the question: with the Nintendo Direct Micro and now this Smash Bros. Broadcast--will the Digital Event suffer from all this information already happening, or will we see more new content from Nintendo than ever? Be sure to let us know how you feel below!

    Smash 3DS Endgame - What's Your Progress?

    So, how is everyone doing in their Smash 3DS progress so far? Or are you even still playing? I have one challenge left on page 2, a little less than half remaining on page 3, 571 trophies, less than 10 players to finish Smash Run with, less than 10 characters to finish Classic with, and almost half to finish All-Star with. Oh, and I still have two hammers left to use on page 3 of Challenges. I'll try my best to finish the challenges grid, but I foresee having to use one of my hammers on the "Spend 50 hours playing Smash" one, simply because I don't play Smash mode a lot (since I don't have anyone to play with locally), and possibly use the other on "Get 1000 KOs." The rest should be pretty doable, though "Finish 100 Man Smash with every character" and that "Get everything (outfits, hats, special moves)" should take a little while longer. What about you?
  4. With less than 24 hours to go until its release, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is nearly upon us. After watching the Nintendo Direct that highlighted 50 previously unknown facts about the game and seeing the breadth of content it contains, it became clear that this would be the version of the game to get if you had to choose between it and the 3DS version. And yet, despite the Wii U version's obvious superiority, I can't help but feel a bit sad about certain features that won't be in it. Granted, there isn't a whole lot of content that is exclusive to the 3DS version, and not all of it is great (certain exclusive levels aren't all that great), but at least some of it is. And since we won't be seeing them making the hop over, here are five things I'll miss from Super Smash Bros. for 3DS that won't be in the Wii U version. 5. Dream Land The stage based on Kirby's Dreamland for the Game Boy was one of the biggest surprises for me, having not had it spoiled before-hand. Design-wise, there isn't anything that makes it a particularly amazing level to play on, but for Kirby fans who grew up with series, it definitely hits that nostalgic sweet spot and ends up being one of the more clever retro-inspired levels the game offers, complete with areas from multiple stages throughout the original game and a few that even scroll through the level. Of course, seeing the Game Boy outline around the screen and the greenish monochrome visuals really sells the whole experience and makes it one of the more charming levels to play in. Unfortunately, this is one of the levels specific to the 3DS version, due to its handheld theme. With the Wii U slated to focus on console game-based stages for the characters in its roster, hopefully we'll get a level that's similar to this; perhaps one based on Kirby's Adventure or Kirby Super Star. 4. 3DS-Specific Trophies While not a huge loss given that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will feature even more trophies than the 3DS version did, it's still a shame that we won't see some of them. Specifically, each character's Alt trophy (which were attained through beating All-Star mode) will likely disappear in lieu of Final Smash trophies coming back, and trophies that are focused on items, enemies, and many (but not all) characters in handheld games (like Spirit Tracks, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Fire Emblem Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, etc.) will be gone in favor of those series' console games instead. On the flipside, this is one of the cooler 3DS-exclusive aspects of the game, and while it's by no means a main reason to buy the handheld version, it does remain an interesting one for those who are interested in seeing/collecting everything. 3. Tortimer Island Yet another stage exclusive to Smash 3DS, Tortimer Island is based on the location of the same name from Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It's one of the most interesting and best new levels introduced in the 3DS version due to it being mostly flat (and thus being ideal fighting terrain), but also because it isn't a virtual clone or visual palette swap of past stages like some others are (like Unova League, Arena Ferox, Rainbow Road, and Paper Mario). What also makes it interesting is that the layout changes each time you play on it, meaning that the stage could be barren except for one tree and a pier on the left end while another time there might be two or even three trees occupying the middle of the stage with the location of the pier reversed. The trees themselves can vary as well, and drop health-restoring fruit or ones that are hard and can be thrown at your opponents to damage them. Above all else, it gets the location just right, with charming little touches like Kap'n coming and going with his boat, one of his family members appearing in the background (along with the family hut), an occasional shark in the water that will attack if you get too close, and more. 2. Spirit Train The last exclusive level on this list and probably my most favorite of them is the Spirit Train stage, based on The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. In addition to having a great stage theme (with the Spirit Tracks medley playing), Spirit Train is just an exciting stage to fight on given the movement and idea of fighting on a moving train, especially given that you might lose a life if you fall off and onto the tracks. It also has a number of surprises and events that happen, such as other trains approaching from the front or behind, platforms appearing above, and even large platformed areas popping up in the rear of the train, keeping things entertaining. But more than anything, it's also one of the best looking levels thanks to its colorfulness and sweeping vistas in the background. While the Wii U version will be getting a level based on Skyloft from Skyward Sword, Spirit Train will definitely be missed, especially since it seems to be more unique between the two levels. 1. Smash Run Love it or hate it, Smash Run is the single biggest exclusive feature/mode that Super Smash Bros. for 3DS has going for it (aside from its portability, that is). Outside of Classic and All-Star Mode, it could be considered the closest thing to a campaign that this version has. Essentially, it's almost a story-less, revamped version of the Subspace Emissary mode from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but with one single, massive level to explore and a time limit. At first, I was indifferent to it, but over time, it actually grew on me. Fighting various enemies from different franchises that you could only see in this mode is one part of why I enjoy it, but it really is like an adventure and it's fun to explore around, finding stat increases, treasures, and the like. More than anything, it's fun to see how far you can raise your stats before time runs out, watching your character grow stronger and stronger along the way. If Subspace Emissary didn't do anything for you, Smash Run probably won't either, but it's an inclusion that I'm glad director Masahiro Sakurai decided to add, and I expect it to be the main reason I'll still pick up and play Smash 3DS even after the Wii U version releases. If you've watched Thursday's Nintendo Direct, then clearly you know that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the version to get if you haven't played the 3DS version yet (or even if you already own it, haha). While I believe it does diminish the 3DS version in a sense, I'm still glad I played it and plan to try to finish as much of the challenges as possible. Will I play it beyond the Wii U version if I finish everything? I don't know. If I'm able to finish most of everything (all trophies, challenges completed), then chances are I probably won't spend much time with it after the Wii U version releases. But there is something nice about having Smash on the go (or at least portable), so I may whip it out for a few matches every now and then. What about you? Think you'll still be playing the 3DS version after November 21? If so, is there a clear stopping point for you (like 100% completion with challenges and such)?
  6. We've all had a good day (or day and a half) to experience Super Smash Bros. for 3DS so far, so thought I'd open this topic to discuss what we think of the game so far. For me, I'm liking it a lot (of course). However, for some reason I'm finding it a bit more... unfocused than previous games. I'm not sure if that's due to the layout of the menu screen, but it seems less like there are things to strive for and complete other than the 35 challenges. Smash Run is fun, but I can only play it so many times, and I'm not sure how often I'll play through the other minigames (100 man brawl, and such). Also, I miss the Event matches from Melee and Brawl! Hopefully those will be back in full force in the Wii U version of the game. I do like the way Classic Mode and All-Star Mode are set up; love the branching paths in the former as well as the way they group characters in time periods together in the latter. Does anyone feel that some of the secret characters are almost too challenging? I'm glad they're not a pushover, but man, some of them took at least two attempts to beat. I also thought the smaller screen size would be a problem for me (keeping track of characters), but surprisingly I've gotten used to it. And I'm using the normal 3DS as well, go figure. Anyhow, those are my thoughts for now. What do you guys think? Is there anything you like or dislike about the game so far? P.S. That actually makes it a better deal than Amazon (since they require $35 for free shipping unless you have Prime). Dunno about the tax, though. It should still come out to less than $40 if there is any.
  8. With the arrival of the Japanese demo for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS this week, many western Smash fans have been wondering if and when the demo would arrive in North America and Europe. Nintendo finally revealed today that you'll be able to download and experience that demo in both territories on September 19. Also of note—Nintendo will be selecting a few Club Nintendo members who have reached Platinum status in the last year to receive four codes for the demo so they can play it early, starting today.   9. Today Nintendo announced that three new special edition 3DS XL systems would be making their way to retailers this Fall. The first is perhaps the most obvious—a Super Smash Bros. Edition 3DS XL, which comes in red or blue and features some nifty artwork from the game on the cover. Sadly, the game will not come bundled (even digitally) so you'll still have to buy it separately. This particular special edition 3DS XL will go on sale on Sept. 19 for $199.99. Next up is a special NES Edition 3DS XL which is modeled after the classic NES controller (and with its box modeled after the console itself). This one will be a GameStop exclusive and will go on sale on Oct. 10 for $199.99. Last but not least, a Persona Q 3DS XL is also coming exclusively to GameStop in honor of Atlus' highly anticipated Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth on Nov. 25 for $199.99. It will be blue and feature grimoire styling on the cover. This edition also sadly does not come bundled with the game. The sale will last until Oct. 2, with each week focused on a new set of fighters and thus games that are based on them. This week will start off with Mario, Bowser, Peach, Luigi, Yoshi, Little Mac, and Rosalina.   11. If you're a huge fan of Super Smash Bros., chances are you're going to buy both the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game this Fall, but everyone else might need some convincing in order to double dip. Nintendo evidently anticipated this, and so they've revealed an incentive to buy both. Those who register both versions of the game on Club Nintendo will receive the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U: Premium Sound Selection; a soundtrack CD that contains music taken from and inspired by the game. Not much is known about this soundtrack beyond that just yet, but Nintendo mentions that more info about the offer will be provided at a later date. Even still, it's exciting to see Nintendo offer physical (as well as substantial) incentives for buying games, and hopefully we'll see it happen more as we head into 2015. Does this offer make you want to buy both Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U now?
  12. Today's new character announcement for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS brought not one, not two, but three character reveals. The first is actually a returning character, Captain Falcon, who makes his fourth appearance in the series and solely represents the F-Zero franchise so far. His moveset from previous games appears intact here, including his signature Falcon Punch move, and not much has changed as far as we can tell from the trailer. Lucina, from Fire Emblem Awakening, was the next revealed character; she's another sword-wielding character like Marth and Ike, as well as another much welcomed female character in a male-heavy roster. Last but not least, Robin, the protagonist from Fire Emblem Awakening, also was confirmed as a playable character as well as having both male and female versions of the character available. Robin carries a sword but is skilled in magic, which appears to encompass the entirety of his/her special moveset. With the inclusion of both Lucina and Robin, the Fire Emblem series is now one of the most heavily represented franchises in Super Smash Bros., rivaling only the Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario franchises (of which there are at least four characters represented from each). Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is scheduled to release in late October while the Wii U version will follow in November. You can check out the announcement trailer for the three characters below. He's long been one of the most wanted characters in the Super Smash Bros. series (especially after starring in 2010's semi-remake of Punch-Out!!) and now Nintendo has officially confirmed that Little Mac will be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. True to his name, Little Mac is a small character, roughly three-quarters the size of Samus, and absolutely dwarved by characters like King Dedede. But what he lacks in size, he makes up for it with his punch. He's also extremely quick and agile, adding another fast character to the roster along with the likes of Fox, Falco, and a few others.   14. If you've played any Super Smash Bros. game, you've seen it well enough by now. "Edge-hogging" has been a part of the gameplay in the series since its inception, where one player will attempt to hang off the edge of the platform/level and keep the other player from climbing back on after they were thrown or smashed off. But that's all about to change if series creator and director of the upcoming Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS Masahiro Sakurai has anything to say about it. According to a new post from the developer on Miiverse, "new changes are being made to attack and defense options for for grabbing edges." In the latest image of the game shared on Smashbros.com (and pictured at the top right in this article), Sakurai reveals that Link's grab is actually trumping Mario's in this instance. Another change he addressed involved the period of invincibility that hanging off a ledge can give and that air time and damage will help determine that. In addition, grab controls are no longer going to be affected by whether a player's damage is above or below 100% damage. Both Sakurai and Namco Bandai really seem to be going all-out to fine-tune all of these details, which is really great to see, and especially so since edge-hogging has been an annoying tactic for so long. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS is currently scheduled for release in 2014.
  15. Revealed at the end of the Nintendo Direct, a new challenger is joining the cast of the new Super Smash Bros. game: Rosalina and Luma. Note that the two are technically a single character, as Rosalina controls the Luma in battle. You can check out the reveal trailer, which also shows some in-game footage of Rosalina, below: Also worth noting is that Rosalina is also making an appearance in Mario Kart 8, making three games that the character is making appearances in such short notice (four if you want to include the Japanese-only Mario Kart arcade game).   16. Smashbros.com's most recent update confirms that another previously playable character will be returning in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS - Toon Link. Those who played Super Smash Bros. Brawl will remember that Toon Link was a virtual "clone" of the normal Link, retaining almost the exact same moveset with just a few differences (toon aesthetics being one of them). It's currently unknown whether this new version of Toon Link will have any new moves, but the images shown so far don't seem to showcase anything new. The timing of the announcement is impeccable as Toon Link is also returning in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, which released last week on the eShop and will be released in retail soon. Toon Link's addition brings the confirmed roster for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS up to 16. You can check out images of him from the Wii U and 3DS versions below.   17. Surprising no one, Peach is returning as a playable character in Nintendo's upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS as confirmed by smashbros.com today, which describes her as a "veteran fighter." Peach first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee and was also in its direct sequel, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though she was not in the very first game on N64. It is currently unknown what her full moveset will be in this game, but the images shared on the smashbros. site show that at least a few moves will be returning, including her "hip bump" attack, umbrella attack, using toad as a shield, and what looks to be her Final Smash which involves hearts. There's also at least one new move, as evidenced by the image showing her using her crown as a potentially deadly new weapon. Check out some of the images of Peach in-game below!
