    Game of the Year 2017: Jordan's Picks

    2017 has been quite the year for us gamers. Not only did Nintendo release the insanely successful Switch, but there have been a lot of quality games released as well, on Switch and just about anything that plays games. Even mobile devices have seen a few really fun games. But with so many quality titles coming out left and right, it was actually pretty overwhelming, and I simply couldn’t keep up. So, since there are still plenty of games I haven’t gotten around to playing yet, I’ve decided to make a less traditional Game of the Year list. Sort of like an award show, if you will. Anyway, enough stalling. Let’s get to it already… Most Addicting Mobile Game Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp I normally don’t put mobile games on my Game of the Year lists, but Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp felt deserving of that honor. It’s a simple mobile game, yet it has the same level of quality you would find in an official game released on Nintendo’s own consoles. And just like when Animal Crossing: New Leaf was first released, I just… can't seem to go a day without playing it at least a little… Best Spiritual Successor to Banjo-Kazooie Yooka-Laylee I’ve been a huge fan of the Banjo-Kazooie games since the day I played the original for the first time. So, when I heard that several members of the original team got together to create a sort of spiritual successor to the series (since, you know, new Rare doesn’t really seem to care much for the IP), you better believe I was excited. And I gotta say, Yooka-Laylee is pretty much exactly what I hoped it would be. I mean, it does have its fair share of flaws, but it’s still a really fun platformer for fans of the Banjo-Kazooie series (well, the first two, anyway), and it definitely satisfied my itch. Of course, Grant Kirkhope’s amazing soundtrack certainly helps. I still have a bit of an itch, though, so hopefully, Playtonic announces Tooka-Laylee soon enough… Best RPG I Still Need to Beat Xenoblade Chronicles 2 I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out. I may not have beaten Xenoblade Chronicles 2 yet, but I’ve definitely played enough to think it’s a really damn good game. Which is awesome, because the original was my favorite game of 2012 and it’s cool to see that the numbered sequel (Xenoblade Chronicles X was more of a spinoff, I guess) is also top-notch. It’s a great RPG with a beautiful world, an engrossing story, and an amazing soundtrack. Really, what more could you want? Most Terrifying Game I've Played All Year Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (VR) Oh man, this game. After all the complaints about the Resident Evil series seemingly forgetting its horror roots in favor of more cinematic gameplay, Capcom did an amazing job giving us an entry that was scary. And Resident Evil 7 is scary as hell. And not only is it a terrifying game in its own right; when you don the PlayStation VR headset? I lost count of how many heart attacks I had during my playthrough… Most Splatastic Shooter Splatoon 2 If you’ve played the first Splatoon, you’ll pretty much know what to expect from Splatoon 2. Not that that’s a bad thing by any means. The original Splatoon is an amazing game, and Splatoon 2 is basically a better version with more features and …probably more people playing, or at least soon enough since the Switch is selling like hotcakes (I still don’t know why that’s a saying). So, don’t you even worry if you haven’t played the original; if you have a Switch, get this game. It’s fun. Biggest Nostalgia Overload Sonic Mania Click here to read GP's official review It’s crazy how satisfied I was with Sonic Mania. Sonic 3 & Knuckles was always up there for me as one of my favorite games ever, so a game so incredibly similar, with stages not only from that particular game, but from other classic Sonic adventures, and with some original levels to boot, is exactly what I needed in my life. You can read my detailed thoughts in my review, but just know that this game is now up there right alongside Sonic 3 & Knuckles as one of my favorite games ever. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, isn’t it? Game I Didn't Expect to Be So Good Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Like many people, I didn’t know how to feel when a Mario and Rabbids crossover was leaked. I just never really liked Rabbids. I always thought they were a little too annoying for my taste. But I felt hopeful once I actually saw what kind of game Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was. And when I actually played it for myself, I was way more satisfied than I thought I would be. It’s insanely fun, and it even made me hate Rabbids a lot less. Seriously, it’s fantastic. Of course, Grant Kirkhope’s amazing soundtrack certainly helps. Wait, why do I feel déjà vu…? Best Game You Should Not Let Your Kids Play South Park: The Fractured but Whole I’ve been a fan of South Park since I was a child, even though I wasn’t supposed to be (so feel free to disregard this entry’s heading). I also enjoyed the games growing up, even though they weren’t exactly top-notch. But man, when South Park: The Stick of Truth came out, I was impressed by how much it seemed like I was playing the show. Not only that, but it was a really great game in general. And now we have a sequel in South Park: The Fractured but Whole (giggle). Which, wouldn’t you know it, is also a really great game. It has a different gameplay style to fit with the superhero theme, which I actually had a lot of fun with, and the humor is just as funny as you would expect. If you like the show, there really isn’t any reason you wouldn’t enjoy this game. Most Fun Globe-Trotting Adventure Super Mario Odyssey Ever since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed just about every Mario game immensely. So, I never feel like I’ll ever be disappointed when a new one comes out. And one thing I love is when a Mario game demolishes my expectations. Super Mario Odyssey is one such game. I knew I’d end up having a lot of fun with it, but once I played the game myself, I was blown away by how good it is. Super Mario Odyssey basically takes everything I love about the series, adds a brand-new mechanic, and gives me one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had. Seriously, I can think of so few negative things to say about this game, it’s crazy. Best Game of 2017 (That I've Played) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Of all the games I’ve played this year, you’d think it would have been tough narrowing down which game I felt deserved the honor of my favorite game of 2017. But to be honest, it really wasn’t. I mean, it was kind of hard not choosing Super Mario Odyssey, since I had so much fun with it, but in the end, I just had to go with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As the series’ first foray into the open world realm, Nintendo did an amazing job. Seriously, there were so many times when I meant to go to a specific place but ended up either getting lost or just getting distracted by a cool place I haven’t seen before. Or I’d find a shrine and feel obligated to check it out. Honestly, even though the series changed quite a bit from what we’re used to, I firmly believe that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a perfect example of what it means to be an “adventure game,” and a very fitting evolution of the original The Legend of Zelda adventure.

Today at Day 2 of E3 2016, Nintendo finally revealed what many fans have been wondering most during their Treehouse Live segment -- the full name of the upcoming Zelda title for Wii U and NX, which is officially titled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Accompanying the title was a brand new trailer that showed off the spirit of that title, in which the world was brought to life with its many varied locations. Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime mentioned that Breath of the Wild will be the biggest Zelda game to date, and that everyone playing the demo at E3 will not be able to explore all of the large area available to them during their time with the game. Even more impressive is that the large area on demo is just a small portion of the actual in-game map. You can check out the trailer and get a sense for how big the game is below. Fils-Aime mentioned that more about the game's story and characters will be discussed at a later date, and that they would be focusing on the gameplay itself this week at E3.   4. Fans of The Legend of Zelda are sure to be happy this morning. Recently announced at E3 2015, a release date for The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes has been confirmed via a Press Release! The game“s coming to North America on October 23rd, 2015. This bit of news and a lot more came out of Gamescom 2015 for Europe--it“s coming out on the same day there, for those curious. As I mentioned in my hands-on impressions of the game from E3, Tri Force Heroes is the perfect marriage of Four Swords Adventures and A Link Between Worlds. Its gameplay is more focused on cooperation than competition. It also has new features still yet to be fully explained, like an emphasis on fashion and the infamous totem mechanic. And hey, it looks like the title will feature Download Play, so all your friends don't have to own a copy of the game! Here's the official website for the game, if you're after even more information. It seems like North America“s getting all the Nintendo news from Gamescom gradually this morning, so stay tuned for more. Are you excited for Tri Force Heroes? Be sure to let us know!
  5. Going into E3 this year, I was fairly confident Nintendo would announce something Zelda-related at their Digital Event besides Hyrule Warriors for 3DS. I wanted it to be Link“s ReAwakening, of course... but I wasn“t going to rule out other options, especially if they lifted from the engine created for A Link Between Worlds. I“m rather disappointed the game didn“t stick with the "90's Link” aesthetic, but I“m proud to report that TriForce Heroes is everything you expect it to be... assuming you“ve played Four Swords Adventures or the Four Swords Anniversary Edition for Nintendo DSi. Triforce Heroes is a multiplayer Zelda game that focuses on co-operative play. It lifts most of its mechanics directly from A Link Between Worlds while also adding new components we don“t know much about yet, like an emphasis on fashion, plus a few other bells and whistles I“ll get to momentarily. The demo was a short romp that tasked me and two other (human) players with clearing only a few rooms by solving puzzles, fighting enemies together, and defeating a boss. It feels a little different than Four Swords insofar as combat often requires the Links to stack on top of one another in order like a totem pole to reach an enemy“s weak spot. Sometimes I would be the feet that pivoted and faced the top player towards the enemy that he or she would shoot...and sometimes I was the shooter. The gameplay is very solid in this respect; stacking Links is as simple as a press of the A button when one is near. You can toss one off you just as quick. It“s virtually seamless. Some of the things we did include shooting switches with arrows at different elevations, so they required the Links to stack and work together to defeat enemies that also weren“t always reachable with just one person alone. And there were parts where all three Links needed to be present, like pushing a super heavy box together to avoid spears as you progressed forward. The boss — an electrified monster — first let you hit it at surface level, then squished itself in to reach heights that required the Links to stack. TriForce Heroes definitely pushes co-op; that“s for sure. The only issue could be communication. I wasn“t able to get clarification, but given what the touch screen is used for... I don“t think voice chat will be activated for this game, online. The fact that it goes online is cool all by itself, but...you“re only able to communicate with other players using little Link avatars with cheery, sad, or pensive faces on the bottom screen. I often had to instruct my peers as to what to do, or someone had to clue me in when I was a certain part of the totem and got confused because so much was happening at once. It should be fine if you and your Zelda Faithful friends all react and play together, but... if there“s a difference in skill, I feel like there could be potential for a communication breakdown. All in all, TriForce Heroes definitely feels like a decent package. It should be fun to experience new co-operative twists on the already-established Four Swords formula, and even better to take them online! The game will be available this fall.   6. Were you expecting Twilight Princess 3D? To be fair, you might still get it...or something else Zelda-related entirely. But it seems one of the games Nintendo/Koei-Tecmo were due to announce during E3 2015 is a 3DS version of Hyrule Warriors, the Zelda-spin-off that hit Wii U just one year ago. And this time, there are Wind Waker characters like Tetra and the King of Red Lions. Consistent with the absolutely crazy Downloadable Content released for the Wii U version of the game--these characters come with some insane twists. The Japanese trailer from Koei-Tecmo“s Official Channel has been made private, so I can“t link it here. ...for now? At any rate: it seems the Wind Waker characters (and presumably any other new content) will be able to be transferred to the Wii U version of the game, after you purchase the hand-held variant. And last but not least, as seen in the game“s box-art, this one“s coming to the entire 3DS family of systems--it won“t be New 3DS exclusive, or anything like that.   7. To the dismay of The Legend of Zelda fans everywhere, Nintendo has announced the delay of the next title in the series for Wii U. That means it will no longer be releasing before the end of 2015. Eiji Aonuma, the producer for The Legend of Zelda for Wii U, gives us a reason for the delay. Basically, he says that his team has discovered "new possibilities" for the game as they "experienced firsthand the freedom of exploration that hasn“t existed in any Zelda game to date." Thus, they would like to explore these new ideas and make this upcoming Zelda game "the best game it can possibly be."   8. This morning“s Nintendo Direct presentation was certainly...something else. At the end of the presentation, I“m honestly not sure whether I“m set to spend money on a brand new Nintendo system or on some therapy. For those of you who didn“t catch the broadcast that ended just a little while ago, here“s all the important pieces of information in one place! Without further ado: The presentation opened with footage of the latest Fire Emblem game for Nintendo 3DS (seen above). At first I thought we were looking at the long-awaited Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, but as it turns out: this is a brand new game for Nintendo hand-helds from the team behind Fire Emblem Awakening. According to Iwata, this game will feature brand new mechanics never before seen in the franchise. It“s good to see Fire Emblem getting some love in North America and Europe right away; we've come a long way since the days when Awakening“s localization was questionable. http://youtu.be/C3boz2E5_sc After the Fire Emblem reveal, several minutes were devoted to some puzzle games coming to Nintendo 3DS! The first of which is something we“ve known about for a little while, Puzzle & Dragons Z and Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition are coming to North America as a set, in one box. The game(s) will be available in North America around May 2015. The second is a brand new Pokémon puzzle game reminiscent of Pokémon Trozei. Pokémon Shuffle is free to play (with a paid content model, of course) on the Nintendo eShop, and is coming in February. This next bit is huge news. Games originally available on Wii like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch Out, and Metroid Prime Trilogy are going to be downloadable on the Wii U very soon. In the case of Super Mario Galaxy 2, it“s going to be available today. Punch Out is coming on January 22nd, and Metroid Prime Trilogy is coming on January 29th. Nintendo“s aim with making these games available as digital download seems to be a way to create Wii games with Gamepad support, as well as make harder to find games like the Metroid Prime Trilogy and hopefully Xenoblade Chronicles, eventually available to everyone. A hard date for Wave 3 amiibos was not given during the presentation (you can still expect those next month, though), but a new wave of Super Smash Bros. amiibos was announced. You can grab Lucina, Robin, Pac Man, Ness and Wario this spring. Also announced this morning: a brand new series of amiibos from Super Mario Bros. Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Yoshi and (for the first time) Toad will be available on March 20th, 2015. The Toad amiibo will be compatible with an update coming to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker in March. Ten amiibo will be compatible with Mario Party 10, a game that got a bit of coverage and new information this morning. Several new modes of play were outlined. After Mario Party 10, more information about Splatoon was revealed. The game“s central hub world was shown for the first time, and Mr. Trinen spent several minutes explaining some features about the game including character customization and more. This game is targeted for May 2015. Majora's Mask fans and Hyrule Warriors fans alike will be excited for this next bit of DLC-related news. Tingle is coming as a playable character to Majora's Mask-themed DLC coming to Hyrule Warriors! His main weapon of choice is his balloon. After talking up Splatoon, a brand new trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X was shown (above) featuring wildly impressive visuals and some story bits. The game is still targeted for 2015 in North America, but Japan actually got a release date: April 29th, 2015. We haven“t heard new information about Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars since E3 of last year, but that changed today. This game will be available for both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but for the first time ever...Nintendo is offering a download code for the opposite system“s version upon your initial purchase of the game! That“s right folks...this new Mario vs. Donkey Kong game is essentially cross-buy! It“s going to be available on March 5th. The second major arc of the Direct was focused on games coming from third-party developers. I think one a handful of people are going to be interested in is Project Treasure, a co-op game for Wii U coming from Namco-Bandai. Other games mentioned in this bit of time include Eliot Quest (whose gameplay and visuals seem inspired by Kid Icarus, in my opinion), Blek, Citizens of Earth, Gunman Clive 2, the remaining episodes of Moon Chronicles from Renegade Kid, the SEGA 3D Classics I told you guys about a few months back, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, and Story of Seasons. Before passing things over to Reggie Fils-Aime, the new Fossil Fighters game for Nintendo 3DS was shown. Fossil Fighters Frontier (above) will be available on March 20th, 2015. And now for the moment many have been waiting for. Reggie announced the New Nintendo 3DS XL for North America this morning, as well as its release date of February 13th, 2015. Looks like that GameStop poster that leaked was right...which means yes, both Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Majora“s Mask 3D are coming February 13th as well. Here“s the thing, though: both of those games are being celebrated with the release of Limited Edition New 3DS XL systems….one for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and one for Majora“s Mask 3D, respectively. The latter sold out in 15 minutes, long before I could even tell you guys about it! A few bits of info not related to the system itself or those two games were revealed during the final arc of the Nintendo Direct. First of all: Fire Emblem amiibos will be compatible with Codename S.T.E.A.M. You can use Marth, Ike, Robin and Lucina amiibos to bring those characters to your game! And don“t worry, you folks hesitant to buy Marth on eBay: a reprint of Marth is happening soon. Xenoblade Chronicles for the New Nintendo 3DS XL was confirmed for North America during the presentation as well. The game has been announced for April in North America, but Europe and Japan both got a concrete date of April 2nd, 2015. I presume North America won“t be waiting long. The game is being worked on by Monster Games, the same folks who ported Donkey Kong Country Returns to Nintendo 3DS a ways back. Also: Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy+ has been announced for February 13th, 2015. View the official PR for the game here. What“s the major down-swing that has many Nintendo fans in North America talking? There is no New Nintendo 3DS [regular size] in North America; only the New 3DS XL has been confirmed. That“s right. Reggie spent some time detailing the system (including its use of MicroSD cards instead of regular SD cards, and the fact that System Transfer information will be made available soon), but made no mention of the smaller option. That means all the nifty face-plates available to Europe and Japan won“t be a thing in North America….at least for now! The system will be available for $199.99, and pre-orders are available now.     Zelda Monopoly Comes Out Next Week

    Wait, so did we know about this before? Doing a quick search on Google reveals that people knew about this a month ago or so, but I'm somehow just finding this out now. Or maybe I just can't remember stuff; who knows. Anyhoo, yeah... The Legend of Zelda Monopoly Apparently GameStop will have an exclusive version that additionally contains an Ocarina of Time playing piece, an 11" x 17" Hyrule Map lithograph, and 6 additional Item Power cards to use during gameplay. It's a pretty attractive-looking board if I do say so myself, and the rupee-themed money is pretty nifty too. Each of these will be $40 a pop starting next Monday (Sep. 15). Anyone else looking to nab this? Any big Monopoly or board game players here?

MASSIVE MARIO KART 8 DLC PACKS ADD 16 NEW COURSES, PLUS NEW DRIVERS AND KARTS Link, Isabelle and Animal Crossing Villager All Get Ready to Race REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 26, 2014 – Two new downloadable content packs will take the world of Mario Kart 8 in directions the franchise has never seen before, while significantly expanding game-play options. The packs, which launch this fall and in spring of 2015, and are available for advance purchase starting Aug. 27 at $7.99 each (or $11.99 for both), deliver a ton of new content, including first-time crossover characters like Link from The Legend of Zelda franchise and both Isabelle and the Villager from the Animal Crossing series. In addition to these two new downloadable content packs, a previously announced game update goes live Aug. 27 that adds a variety of new features, including three free Mercedes-Benz cars that players can race: the modern Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s and the legendary Silver Arrow of the 1930s. The DLC packs include classic courses like Wario“s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first DLC pack. Mario Kart 8 owners who purchase both packs starting Aug. 27 will get access to eight new colors of Yoshi and eight new colors of Shy Guy to race with immediately.   11. We knew it was coming, and it's finally here. While no official name was given to the name just yet, series producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed that The Legend of Zelda for Wii U will feature the game's first truly open 3D world. Players can set off in any direction to explore the world as they please, much like in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds from last year. The game's visuals were also revealed to be carried on from Skyward Sword's, showing a painterly aesthetic brought to life in 1080p. We got a glimpse of what appears to be Hyrule Field and Link on his horse Epona from a distance. At the end of the video, a large Octorok-like mechanical beast chases Link and Epona until they reach a pier by a lake where Link jumps and shoots the creature with a bow & arrow of some type. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, the game is currently slated for release in 2015 next year, but we'll likely get more information on it through Nintendo Directs coming later in the year and beyond.   12. Famitsu magazine has released new information about the much anticipated, upcoming Zelda spin-off Hyrule Warriors today. Among the news announced was that of a two-player mode that will make use of both the TV and Wii U gamepad. Even more interesting, perhaps, was the announcement that there will be other characters you will be able to play as besides Link, including Impa, who will lead the Elite Guard in Hyrule Warriors and fights with a long sword. Fans of the Zelda series may remember Impa as Zelda's guardian and servant to the royal family of Hyrule in her many incarnations throughout the games, but perhaps her two most famous roles were in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time where she fled Hyrule Castle and hid Princess Zelda from Ganondorf, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, where she acted as Zelda's guide and protector from Ghirahim. While this is the first time we've been able to play as a character other than Link in a Zelda game (canonical or otherwise), the Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi series are known for incorporating many different characters, such as the most recent entry in the series, Dynasty Warriors 8, which features over 70 different playable characters. Additionally, Famitsu revealed that different weapons will change the way your character will fight, with one-handed swords emphasizing speed and heavier weapons highlighting damage instead. Weapons will also be upgradeable and there will be a character progression system as well. While no release date has been announced for North America or Europe yet, the Hyrule Warriors is announced to be 70% complete at the moment and will be releasing on August 16 in Japan. More news about the game is expected to come at E3 in just under a month where the game is said to be playable.     Hyrule Warriors Announced for Wii U

    While the focus of today's Nintendo Direct was in fact on Spring 2014 releases, there was one big announcement of a game still in development. This Wii U title, with the working title of Hyrule Warriors, combines Dynasty Warriors gameplay with the Legend of Zelda universe. It is stressed that this is not the anticipated 'Zelda U' title; this is a spin-off project. Also, since it was only recently revealed, there is no current release date for the title. Developer: Nintendo EAD Group No. 3 Publisher: Nintendo Platform: 3DS Release Date: November 22, 2013 ESRB: E for Everyone As I sit here writing this review, I find myself stunned that it's been almost an entire decade since the last 2D Zelda game released. It isn't every day that we get a new one, let alone one that serves as a sequel to one of the most beloved entries in the series, which is more than two decades old at this point. Often hailed as one of the very best Zelda games to this day, A Link to the Past perfected the 2D formula in the series and served as a template for all future entries. Now Nintendo is returning to that version of Hyrule, but can The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds live up to its predecessor's lofty standards, or will it be forced to live in its shadow? A Link Between Worlds is set some period of time after the events that transpired in A Link to the Past and follows the adventure of a new, young Link. The world has long been at peace, but a malevolent character known as Yuga has begun to wreak havoc by turning people into paintings and transporting them to a shadowy, alternate realm for his own nefarious reasons. This era's Link almost meets the same fate, but due to a mysterious bracelet, he's able to use this ability to his advantage, forming the central gameplay mechanic - turning into a painting/mural that can walk along the wall and access new areas by walking through cracks and bypassing gaps and the like. But more on that in a minute. One of the great things here is that, just like the game's 20-year-old predecessor, it doesn't take long for the game to throw you right into the action. There's no lengthy diatribe at the beginning or overly specific tutorial. Instead, the game introduces you into the hack-and-slash dungeon-crawling and puzzle solving gameplay in a simple yet methodical way, with Link intending to begin work as an apprentice for a blacksmith, only for a sword delivery to escalate into a full-blown adventure, recalling in part the spirit of how the previous game began. The surrounding world opens up pretty quickly too - you can access much of Hyrule almost instantly without being walled off by objects and obstacles that would previously prevent your progression due to not having a certain item. This new openness is further expanded by another new feature - the ability to rent different items that are used to progress within dungeons (and on the overworld as well) from a new, rabbit-hooded character named Ravio, who sets up shop in your own house relatively early on. Due to the open nature of being able to rent these items, it also means that you can select the order in which you'd like to tackle each dungeon instead of being relegated to a linear progression. While initially a bit weary of this idea, I found it to be a surprisingly refreshing change that actually doesn't water the gameplay down or change it significantly in any way. Given that this world is set in the same Hyrule that A Link to the Past is set in, much of the overworld is actually the same. In fact, I'd say that at least 80% of Hyrule is, possibly more. You'll still find old mainstays like The Lost Woods in the same upper right corner of the map, Kakariko Village right below it, Death Mountain in the upper right corner and so on and so forth. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - let's not forget that A Link to the Past's has one of the most beloved overworld areas in the series - but it is a little unfortunate that so little has changed. Returning in similar fashion is the existence of an alternate world you'll traverse back and forth to called Lorule (get it - Hyrule? Lorule?), which is very similar in part to the Dark World from A Link to the Past, even containing many of the same areas (Skull Woods, Misery Mire, etc.). But unlike The Dark World, Lorule really is in fact an alternate, opposite version of Hyrule, complete with its own castle and princess - Hilda. Using different dark fissures found throughout both worlds, you'll be able to travel back and forth between them, finding new passage ways, secrets, and more. As for the painting mechanic, it's used in some interesting ways, mostly in dungeons, but also outside as well. In addition to being the main method of traveling between worlds (through the fissures), it serves as a way to slip by certain obstacles, or perhaps over a ravine with no bridge, and even find new platforms that are seemingly out of reach. It's a fun and interesting new design, but it's used surprisingly less often than I would have expected, with much of the dungeon gameplay focusing more on traditional item usage and puzzles for the most part. Visually, the game offers the same top-down perspective found in A Link to the Past, though the world has a very nice-rounded look to its characters, trees, and the like. Personally, I like the artistic direction they went with, though it may not be for everyone. A Link Between Worlds also makes the best of use of stereoscopic 3D in any 3DS game since Super Mario 3D Land as it's cleverly used to showcase height, especially, with one dungeon early on making good use of this tactic. The story itself is also fairly interesting, managing to throw in a few interesting new characters along the way. Though they aren't fleshed out quite as much as characters in recent console versions have been, Princess Hilda and Yuga both have interesting arcs, especially with what the former's existence means compared to Zelda's and how she relates to her. Where this game truly succeeds, though, is in its classic gameplay - it harkens back to Zelda games of old where the world is yours to explore. There's something about the top-down 2D design that lends itself extraordinarily well to this aspect that the 3D Zelda games don't capture quite the same way. Tons of secrets abound everywhere, from traditional hidden heart container pieces to side quests from different characters to different caves and areas you'll find around the world. If you're like me, you'll turn over every rock, bomb every suspicious pattern on the wall, and turn into a painting to find every out of reach or cleverly hidden area, and you'll absolutely love it. It could be said that A Link Between Worlds plays it safe - almost too safe, some might say. After all, it does use many of the same assets (albeit recreated) and much of the same music that originated in A Link to the Past. And yet, it's hard to complain when that formula was so perfect to begin with. A Link Between Worlds is very much a re-imagining of sorts of that original game's design for today's crowd, and it works extraordinarily well. It's a great throwback to a classic game that proves 2D Zelda games are still some of, if not the best Zelda games out there. If you have a 3DS, you owe it to yourself to play what is arguably one of the best Zelda games in years, and easily one of this year's very best titles. Pros: + Great open world with plenty of secrets to explore + Great dungeon designs + New arrangements for the music are fantastic + Art direction is nice and fits the game well Cons: - Much of the game's design is based on A Link to the Past, including the overworld; lack of originality in that aspect is a tiny bit disappointing. Overall Score: 9.5 (out of 10) Fantastic Despite its many nods to A Link to the Past's design, A Link Between Worlds succeeds as a spiritual successor to that game and cements itself as one of the best Zelda titles and must-play games of the year.
  16. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is definitely one of the best games I“ve ever played. When an HD version for the Wii U was announced, I was ecstatic. Not only is it the perfect excuse to replay Wind Waker for the thousandth time, but it“s also a chance to experience the game in a new light. While I wandered around Nintendo“s booth during E3, I definitely made some time to try out the Wind Waker HD demo that was provided. In this Wind Waker HD demo, there were two playable modes: Island Stroll and Boss Battle. Island Stroll is basically the beginning of Wind Waker, where you“re given tutorials and attain your sword. You“re also given some weapons like the bow to mess around with. This mode is pretty much a way to show off Wind Waker HD“s updated graphics and new control scheme. I tried out and will be focusing on the Boss Battle mode. This mode features the battle against the Helmaroc King at Forbidden Fortress. I know how this battle works like the back of my hand, but the Wii U GamePad made it into a very different experience. If you“re quick enough and you aren“t slowed down by bokoblins, you can make it to the top to start the battle without having to use your grappling hook. Unfortunately, a bad jump caused me to fall all the way back down to the bottom. When I had to whip out my grappling hook, I realized I had to aim by moving the GamePad around. It was very awkward to accomplish perfectly, though, and I missed more than half the time. On the other hand, Link is now able to move in any direction without having to stop his swinging completely. In any case, I eventually did make it to the top. Thus, my showdown with the mighty Helmaroc King commenced. The battle remained largely the same, and I cracked open his protective headgear in no time and proceeded to slay the bird. I also had a chance to really appreciate how smooth and beautiful the new graphics looked (though I still have some problems with how much of the bloom effect is used). Another thing about Wind Waker HD to delve into is how the GamePad is taken advantage of. Similar to Ocarina of Time 3D, the GamePad“s screen contains everything from the main menu – weapon selection, the map, and so forth. This will make things a lot easier, especially with selecting weapons. Personally, I was very pleased with my time playing the Wind Waker HD demo and can“t wait for October to come so I can once again dive into Wind Waker“s world.
  17. "It's a secret to everybody nobody." Okay, that was lame... Let's just get to the point. About two months ago, I shared with you Five Zelda Theories Backed By Hyrule Historia. Hyrule Historia, of course, being the legendary book of everything by the Zelda creators themselves. But the fun doesn“t end with just five, as I“ve got five more for you in Part II of our theory-filled analysis! So sit back, relax, and possibly don“t fall asleep as I conclude Hyrule Theoria with another five theories backed by Hyrule Historia. Warning: Potential spoilers abound! The Deku Mask in Majora“s Mask Holds the Spirit of the Deku Butler“s Son Majora“s Mask is depressing enough as it is, what with a friggin“ Moon about to destroy the world and all. But before all that happens, a Skull Kid wearing a certain mask transforms Link into a Deku Scrub, after which he runs into a dead Deku Scrub before eventually meeting the Happy Mask Salesman. But who exactly is this Deku Scrub? Well, later in the game Link meets a tribe of Deku Scrubs. In this tribe is a butler, who mentions his son leaving home long ago and never returning. And it was strongly implied during the credits of the game that this is his son, as you can see the Deku Butler weeping over this dead Deku Scrub. So then, is it possible that this Deku Scrub“s spirit is what the Skull Kid used to transform Link into a Deku Scrub? Link eventually gets his curse lifted, which then turns into the Deku Mask and allows Link to turn into a Deku Scrub whenever he wants. The thing is, the masks that transform Link into things are inhabited by the souls of the dead. Throughout the game, Link meets some of these dead souls, but never the one living inside the Deku Mask. Many fans believed that this is indeed the spirit of the Deku Butler“s missing son, and that theory was recently confirmed by Hyrule Historia on page 112, which reads, “Link“s transformation into a Deku Scrub is caused by the spirit of a member of the Deku tribe that died in the forest connecting Hyrule and Termina.†The Temple of Time in Twilight Princess Is the Same One From Ocarina of Time Twilight Princess takes place roughly 100 years after Ocarina of Time, so of course you would expect some similarities between the two games in terms of locations. Some of these are more apparent than others, such as the Lost Woods and Death Mountain. But how about the Temple of Time? In Ocarina of Time, the temple is found near Hyrule Castle close to the center of the land. However, in Twilight Princess, the temple is found deep within a forest. This couldn“t possibly be the same Temple of Time, could it? It might seem strange, but when you look at the similarities between the two Temples of Time, the resemblance is quite striking to say the least. Many fans have taken this as a sign that they are indeed one in the same, and that the temple simply decayed and became overrun with plant life over the years. And you know what, those guys are right. On page 117 of Hyrule Historia, it states that “the Temple of Time, home to the Master Sword“s pedestal, has rotted away and lies in ruins within the forest.†There was another theory claiming that the temple was simply moved to another location, but that now appears to be false. Sorry, believers of that theory. The Hero of Time Makes an Appearance in Twilight Princess In Twilight Princess, there are many connections to Ocarina of Time, from similar locations to the same Ganondorf even making an appearance. One connection you probably wouldn“t expect is the Hero of Time, Link himself, making some sort of appearance, considering each Link is a reincarnation of the same spirit. But some people did suspect that, as the Hero“s Shade shares some similarities, such as his left-handed swordsmanship and the nature of some of his dialogue. But that couldn“t possibly be the spirit of the Hero of Time, could it? I mean, that spirit lies within Link himself, so it couldn“t possibly be him. But alas, it is the spirit of the Hero of Time. Or rather, it“s the spiritual manifestation of the hero“s regrets. According to Hyrule Historia, in a note on page 118, “The spirit of Link“s ancestor, the Hero of Time, teaches him his secrets. Ever since returning to the Child Era, the swordsman has lamented the fact that he was not remembered as a hero. This is the reason he passes down the proof of his courage and his secret techniques to the Link of this era, addressing him as ”son.“†The reason for these regrets is, of course, the fact that once Link had returned to the Child Era, he never defeated Ganondorf and saved Hyrule. He saved Termina, but that kind of news doesn“t exactly travel with him back to Hyrule. Not without Link looking crazy, anyway (“I saved a parallel world, I swear I did!â€). Descendants of Ocarina of Time“s Great Deku Tree, Volvagia, and Jabu-Jabu Appear in The Wind Waker When people met the Great Deku Tree in The Wind Waker, a common speculation that was made was that this Deku Tree was the mature Deku Tree Sprout found in Ocarina of Time. This theory was supported by the way they both talk and the fact that The Wind Waker“s Deku Tree seems to recognize Link“s green tunic. And of course, with The Wind Waker being in the Adult Timeline, the only one the Deku Tree Sprout survives in, this isn“t too far-fetched at all. But other than him, there has also been speculation that Valoo was somehow related to Volvagia and Jabun was related to Jabu-Jabu, though these theories aren“t as well-supported. These theories weren“t dismissed, however, as Hyrule Historia touches upon them as well. On page 127 of the book, a note reads “Even after the land of Hyrule was sealed away, the guardian spirits of the three pearls of the goddesses remain. They are thought to be descended from Volvagia, the Deku Tree, and Jabu-Jabu, spirits that existed during the Era of the Hero of Time.†This doesn“t entirely confirm these theories as facts, nor does it say anything about the Great Deku Tree from The Wind Waker being the mature Deku Tree Sprout from Ocarina of Time, but it does support the possibility of Valoo, Jabun, and the Great Deku Tree (WW) being descendants of the three guardian spirits Volvagia, Jabu-Jabu, and the Great Deku Tree (OoT), especially when the authors know all of Zelda“s secrets. At least, I would hope the creators of Zelda would know all there is to know about the series… There Was a Link Before Skyward Sword The Link in Skyward Sword is thought to be the very first Link by many. However, it is also known that that very same Link is the successor to a hero chosen by Hylia herself during the Era of the Goddess Hylia thousands of years prior. In fact, the ceremony at the beginning of the game has Zelda playing the goddess while Link plays this chosen hero. But who exactly is this hero? Could it possibly be an earlier incarnation of Link, rather than simply a successor? Many think so, but no one can really say for certain. However, at the very back of Hyrule Historia is a Skyward Sword manga that tells the tale of this chosen hero, who is depicted as the earliest incarnation of Link, green tunic and all. The 32-page manga also explains that this hero tempered the Master Sword with his spirit, being destined to serve as its master for all eternity. Furthermore, the red loftwing from Skyward Sword also makes an appearance in the manga, somehow having lived for thousands of years, and choosing Link specifically because he is the reincarnation of the first Link. And when the first Link dies toward the end, Hylia says “I will ensure that your gentle, heroic spirit will live on eternally. And I… I shall shed my divinity. The next time we meet, I wish to stand before you as a simple human.†Keep in mind that this manga hasn“t been confirmed as canon to the series, but being included in Hyrule Historia is certainly strong support for that possibility. And to further support the theory that there was indeed a Link before Skyward Sword, Eiji Aonuma himself once stated in an interview the possibility of future Zelda games taking place before Skyward Sword. If this theory is accurate, we may very well see a future Zelda game taking place at the beginning of everything, with Link being Hylia“s chosen hero. Only time will tell...
