Famed game designer Cliff Bleszinski has had a good run in the game industry over the years, most notably having created the Unreal and Gears of Wars franchises. But earlier this year, his development studio, Boss Key Productions, was forced to shut down due to low sales of its game, Lawbreakers. While he initially mentioned in a Twitter statement (which has since been removed) that he'd be stepping away from games for a bit to focus on his family, Bleszinski appears to have changed his mind about ever coming back now. In a new tweet today, he responded to another Twitter user saying that he would never make another game again. The comment was made in reference to the other user's disappointment about Boss Key not refunding fans after Lawbreakers (and the studio as a whole) shut down. Bleszinski also reveals in the tweet that he paid employees' salaries, 401Ks, and their healthcare for months after the studio had folded so that they could care for their families. Of course, this doesn't mean Bleszinski couldn't change his mind about the industry sometime in the future, but it does appear that he won't be making any games anytime soon. Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, and now, Cliff Bleszinski. The greats can't stay away for long. Yesterday, Cliffy B announced via Twitter that he was coming out of retirement to work on video games once more. While his upcoming project has yet to be revealed, he said to expect more info sometime over the next seven days. In addition, he teased that he cannot wait for fans to hear the story of what brought him back into the industry. Bleszinski is best known for his work on Gears of War and Unreal Tournament. What do you think Cliffy B's next game will be?
Kind of random, for anyone wondering what Cliffy B has been up to, apparently he opened a restaurant with his business partner in Raleigh, NC today. It's supposed to be an outdoor grill-type place, and according to people who've gone today it's pretty good too. I believe the business partner is mostly running it, which would probably leave Cliff as a financier or owner of a certain percentage of the restaurant. I thought I remember reading that he had started up a new game dev studio a while back too, but I can't remember.
Jason Clement posted a article in Industry NewsIn another surprising departure, Epic Games announced today that design director Cliff Bleszinski is leaving the renowned company, citing that he's looking to take a well deserved break from the industry. "I“ve been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop," Bleszinski stated. "I literally grew up in this business, as Mike likes to say. And now that I“m grown up, it“s time for a much needed break." Bleszinski has been instrumental in the development of many of Epic's games over the year, from Jazz Jackrabbit to the Gears of War series, and he leaves behind a 20 year legacy at the company. While the departure was amicable on both ends, it is currently unknown whether he plans to continue in the video game industry in some fashion after his break. His departure makes him the fifth major developer to leave a company this year, following the exit of David Jaffe from Eat Sleep Play, Peter Molyneux from Lionhead, and Doctors Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka from Bioware.
