  1. This was a pretty interesting story I stumbled across on Twitter today. Apparently a boy in middle school was challenged to create a real-life "Holodeck" (from TNG) for a science fair. Obviously he wasn't able to create one just like in the show, but what he did come up with was pretty interesting. You can check out the story here. I'll never know how some of these kids come up with what they do, but it's pretty darn impressive.
  2. If you keep tabs on the indie game community, then you're probably aware of who Zoe Quinn is. If not, she was the developer behind Depression Quest. Anyhow, it turns out that Zoe was mugged today (at gunpoint and all) and lost several important cards, but most importantly her rent money for the month. After posting about the account on Twitter, the online community rallied and donated more money to her than she lost in less than 30 minutes of the initial tweet. Although she's not quite out of the woods yet (she tweeted that Paypal was reviewing the donations made toward her, making her nervous that an incident might happen where they may end up holding the funds), it is pretty amazing how people look after one another like this. This might not happen for everyone on Twitter, but it just goes to show that there are plenty of decent people within the gaming community who are pretty selfless. Glad to hear everything is working out for her so far; let's hope Paypal doesn't decide to do anything to make this situation more difficult.
  3. Stumbled across this video of a guy who made his own Batarang that actually acts as a real boomerang. You can watch him demonstrate the throwing below; personally I can watch him throw that all day.
  4. Well this is...terrifying, lol. If malware could spread to other computers without a network connection then this opens up a whole new can of worms. Of course, it might be a while before hackers or the like start using this as a regular thing, but it's still frightening to think about.
  5. Someone posted on this on Twitter and I thought it was pretty interesting. Basically, the video breaks down your life into into jelly beans representing each day and explains how much of our time is consumed by working, eating, sleeping, doing mundane tasks, and other things, and shows how little "free" time we have left. Really makes you think in the end about how we spend our time.
  6. Have you ever wondered what electricity can do to wood? Me neither, but this is pretty interesting. While wood generally isn't a conductor of electricity (it's an insulator), it can if it's wet or green (still retaining moisture content). Take a look at what happened when, Melanie Hoff, a student at Brookyln's Pratt Institute hooked up cables carrying 15,000 volts of electricity to a large sheet of plywood; the results are pretty interesting. P.S. Is the video working for anyone?
  7. Welp, looks like they won't be using the Expanded Universe as an outline for the next few movies after all. In my opinion though, this is a good thing; not that the EU is bad, but I'd like to see something new. Source: IGN Also, it looks like some prominent directors have shared their thoughts on Disney acquiring Lucasfilm (and Star Wars as a part of that deal). Kind of cool to read about what they think; check out the link below for the full article. Source: EW.com What do you guys think? Are you glad it's going to be a new story, or did you want to see something from the Expanded Universe like the Thrawn Trilogy?
  8. Someone tweeted this the other day and I just had to share it because it's pretty interesting. Apparently in 1956, the man in this rare video footage of the game show I've Got a Secret was the only surviving eyewitness of Abraham Lincoln's assassination at the time. He was 90-something years old at that point, but he was 5 years old when the assassination happened. Crazy to think that someone from that bygone era could still be around in the beginning of the television era and when technology was beginning to blossom.
  9. Ok, technically it's not really a 3D printer since it doesn't "print" burritos, but it does make them and that's cool enough, right? Anyhow, a guy at NYU made a machine called "BurritoBot" that makes burritos to your liking. See the full article below: Source: Technology-Digital
  10. Jason Clement

    Adorable Baby Octopi

    From National Geographic, I guess.
  11. Gizmodo posted this video earlier and I thought I'd share it here because it's pretty amazing, especially if you love landscapes and nature and photography/cinematography in general. Apparently it took the filmmaker 2 years to film this. Check it out below. Source: Gizmodo
  12. You all remember (or have heard of) the original Star Wars arcade game right? The vector-based one? It turns out there is a guy who made a 1/6 replica of that arcade cabinet. Check out the story below. Source: Hackaday.com
  13. So apparently someone found a high school on Google Maps that looks like the Millenium Falcon when seen from a birds-eye-view. This can't be a coincidence, can it? If so, that's amazing!
