    MediEvil is being remastered!

    As most of you know, I love MediEvil so this makes me very happy! I hope they do both games but I’ll be happy either way. Perhaps this will pave the way for a sequel one day. I had thought about going to PSX this year, but that’s a tough time being so close to the holidays, but this announcement has me kicking myself.

In light of Nintendo moving forward with the SNES Classic this Fall, the news has people speculating not only on future consoles that they might do this with (N64 Classic, Gamecube Classic) but also on whether Sony would benefit from doing something similar. Case in point: A PlayStation Classic/Mini. I can imagine people would be excited for it, and they probably wouldn't have too much of an issue storing everything on a 32GB drive, even if PlayStation games were much larger in size than SNES and N64 games. Also, this would be a great solution for Sony to put out their best PS1 titles all in one place if they don't think it's worth bringing to PS4. Unlike the SNES Classic, I could see Sony putting at least 25 of PlayStation's biggest hits on there; here's my predictions for what they'd be.   4. So today the PS+ lineup for August was revealed, and it's...different? Full lineup: Tricky Towers, PS4 Rebel Galaxy, PS4 Yakuza 5, PS3 Retro/Grade, PS3 Patapon 3, PS Vita Ultratron, PS Vita, PS3, PS4 Tricky Towers looks like some kinda crazy version of Tetris, so that could be fun, and I'll probably try Rebel Galaxy. My PS3 isn't working otherwise I'd give Yakuza 5 a shot too, but I have Retro/Grade on Steam already. I dunno anything about Patapon so I'll have to look that up, but Ultratron (which I also have on Steam) is pretty fun. Overall doesn't seem like a terrible lineup, but also nothing really stands out, besides maybe Yakuza 5 since it was one of the last big PS3 releases and isn't that old yet. Anyway, what do you think about August's PS+ games?

    Limited Edition Journey Statue Now Up for Order

    If you're a fan of collector's items (especially ones pertaining to games), you might want to check this out. Sony has announced that they will be selling 1,000 limited edition Journey statues on their website, and orders are live right this instant. The statue/sculpture features two pilgrims (one wearing the normal brown cloak, and one wearing the special white one) journeying together with their scarves blowing in the wind. It comes in at an approximate size of 11 inches tall, 8 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Each statue will also come with a 5"x7" color print of the original conceptual design art. You can order the statue for a cool $150 right now, but you might not want to take too long to think about it; after all, they are limited to 1,000 overall.     Uncharted 4 PSX Demo

    Here it is. The unscripted Uncharted demo from Playstation Experience. Definitely the most impressive part of the presentation. Many have speculated since the first teaser trailer as to where development on the game was and whether or not they could meet the late 2015 release. I think seeing the gameplay reassured and actually surprised people with how far along it actually is. There has been some debate on whether it would have been better placed at the end of the keynote as opposed to the open. I thought it was great for the open because it basically said, "This is why you bought a PS4 but wait there's more." Honestly, I think it impressed even more than Sony expected. GOTY 2015? What were your impressions with the trailer and what can we expect from Uncharted 4?

    Review: The Legend of Korra

    Developer: Platinum Games Publisher: Activision Platform: PC (Steam), PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One ESRB: T for Teen Release Date: October 21, 2014 This review is based on the PS4 version of the game It is no secret that, despite the brilliance of the franchise, the Avatar video games themselves are an unanimous atrocity. Enter perhaps one of the biggest surprises of 2014: The Legend of Korra video game, developed by renowned action-game developer Platinum Games. Does The Legend of Korra transcend the woes of its predecessors and thereby renew the Avatar gaming franchise? The answer is unfortunately ambiguous because despite working within a narrative framework penned by series writer Tim Hedrick—who disregards his own source material—it is the little things that developer Platinum Games does that fans should and will take notice of. The Legend of Korra video game serves to connect the second and third seasons of the television show, and it rightfully presupposes knowledge of Korra and Team Avatar's exploits. As such, one is immediately subjected to the world of Korra with little to no explanation of the franchise's lore. Consequently, for those unfamiliar with the Nickelodeon television show, the video game is not an ideal starting point. Unfortunately, the game's narrative is abysmal and is not worth delineating too much, primarily because the impossible act requires the existence of an actual narrative. Instead, what prevails is some semblance of a narrative that can easily be mistaken for the ramblings of a third-grader in his or her attempt to correctly explain the plot of any major action Hollywood production. As told through brief animated cut-scenes between missions, there is a bad guy whose aim is do bad things. The player assumes the role of a good guy who must do good things to stop said bad guy from doing bad things. To no one's surprise Korra is once again without bending and by means of linear progression she must unlock each of her abilities in turn as a means to triumph. Additionally, the disappointing absence of major characters from the series has Korra—and the player—progress primarily alone throughout the course of the adventure. However, this does not provide sufficient reason to charge the story mode with irrelevance and posit the game, on the whole, as a complete failure. Underneath the narrative there lies quasi-RPG and free-runner components that augment what would otherwise be a mundane enterprise. The more Korra utilizes a particular element (i.e. water, earth, fire, air) it, in addition to leveling-up, will admit the use of new combos. These combos, however, will need to be purchased in-game using 'spirits' that are obtained through combat, environment destruction, and mission completion. The in-game shop also provides the player with items that range from health potions to passive power-ups that can, for example, increase Korra's damage but reduce her maximum HP. Some of the eight chapters are linked via an endless-runner minigame of sorts that neither annexes nor hinders the experience. In fact, I found each to be quite fun. Additionally, the shop system works quite well, save for a few fundamental oversights. If the player purchases an item and uses it during a mission after the game auto-saves—only to die thereafter—he or she will have to repurchase the item upon starting once more at the checkpoint and is not reimbursed. While this can at times be an annoyance, the consumable items are relatively inexpensive provided of course the player is collecting as much spirit as possible. There was never a moment when I could not afford a consumable item even as I died over and again during my playthrough on Extreme. The Legend of Korra also has a share of collectibles to gather and uncover. Hidden items are scattered throughout and are tucked neatly away within large treasure chests. In order to yield the highest reward, it is the task of the player to beat-up the chests making sure to do the most damage as quickly as possible. Some early collectibles can only be obtained by way of specific elemental powers that the player as of that point does not possess. It is such that one will have to replay a few missions if he or she wishes to collect everything. Additionally, there are a few costumes that are unlocked by both entering secret codes and completing the game on various difficulties. Given the game's developer, combat is unmistakably the foundation from which the game was built. While indeed the player can burn through enemies using any singular element, one is encouraged to make use of all the elements in succession as switching between the four is done with the simple press of a button. Doing so provides a unique combat experience that is able to cater to long-time fans of the series and newcomers alike. Platinum Games is, as a result, walking the line of moderation in The Legend of Korra. It is this finite degree of moderation that debilitates the combat and leaves avid action-gamers conclusively wanting. The aforementioned combos are limited in scope and are easy to perform. Further, as there are no unique skill-trees when leveling-up and acquiring combos, the bending itself lacks personal identity. The fluidity of the combat is impressive in its own right and I rarely ran into difficulties with the camera; being able to lock-on to specific targets assisted in what could have otherwise been convoluted occurrences. The Legend of Korra does not stray far from brawler conventions for the core of its combat is fundamentally composed of blocking, dodging, countering and attacking. Combat is simultaneously enjoyable to take part in and easy to comprehend. Make no mistake, however; The Legend of Korra is difficult—even downright unfair at times. In fact, the game does not care for the distinction between the two. While standard enemies do pose a viable challenge and one will find themself repeating a number of sequences in acrimonious despair, it is the repetitive nature of each boss fight that plagues the immediacy of the game's action. During each boss encounter the player must obnoxiously dodge as one waits for the single easiest attack to counter lest he or she have to start all over again. The tiresome redundancy as put forth by each boss is embellished all the more given the provocative novelty of the final boss. Once the story is complete the player unlocks Pro Bending. During Pro Bending matches the player must attack his or her opponents. When an opponent's health is low, that particular opponent will be pushed backward one section. If all three opponents are pushed back, the player's team advances as a means of enclosing the gap between the other team and the back of the stage. To be brief, the objective of Pro Bending is to progress forward while knocking all three opponents back and off the stage. Pro Bending is a fun reward for completing the game; however, the latter, more competitive tiers are riddled—surprise, surprise—with frustratingly unfair computer antics. The player can only assume the role of Korra and, per Pro Bendering rules, is limited to water bending alone. One can use either weak or strong attacks as he or she dodges, dips, dives, ducks, and dodges their way to victory. On occasion, Mako and Bolin provide commentary, but the player will be too frustrated with their AI to be amused. Simply allowing the player to direct the actions of both brothers—that is to say give them orders—would have resolved most of the issues that arise during a given match. The Legend of Korra video game does not quite live up to its potential. And while fans of the Nickelodeon television series might not walk away entirely disappointed, the game does leave much to be desired. The initial experience is short, lasting anywhere from about four to six hours, but the handful of extra goodies call for one's attention. It is hard for me to recommend this game to those unfamiliar with the source material, but it is even more difficult for me to recommend this to fans without sounding apprehensive. In the end, what Avatar fans are left with once more is a longing for a game that will do the franchise justice—perhaps an open-world game, or maybe even a 2D fighter developed by Arc System Works or French Bread. Until then, what we have is what we have and what we have really is not all that bad—it's just not all that good either. Pros: + 'Normal' and 'Extreme' difficulties offer nice challenges + Smooth, elaborate, combat compliments the painterly aesthetic + Quasi-RPG aspects give rise to a sense of accomplishment and growth + Alternating between bending techniques and pulling-off long combos makes one feel powerful Cons: - The experience is repetitive and brief - The narrative is dull and uninspired - Major characters from the series are absent - The aforementioned RPG elements leave one wanting - The computer can at times be unfair, but not necessarily difficult - Those who are not fans of the show will find little to get excited about Overall Score: 6 (out of 10) Decent While the game derives little from the rich history of its source material, it nevertheless accomplishes the task of being a sound beat-em-up with fun expeditious combat. Well Sony Santa Monica Studios just released Fat Princess: Piece of Cake on the app store, a mobile game featuring the confection crazy, crown carrying princess from the PSN title Fat Princess. Fat Princess: Piece of Cake is a blend of RPG elements and match-3 gameplay that is free-to-play and utilizes in-app purchases for things such as special in-game items and stamina refills. What sets this game apart from the many others in it's genre however is the promise of a free download code for the original Fat Princess for any player who completes level 15. https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/fat-princess-piece-of-cake/id874611551?mt=8 So if you missed Fat Princess, Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake for PSP, or even Best of PSN Vol. 1 (which features Fat Princess among other notable PSN titles) this may be an easy (and free!) way to check out this classic Sony title, while wasting a bit of time on your phone, no less. Right now the game is only for iDevices but Santa Monica promises an Android version is in the works. Do you already own Fat Princess or is the promise of a free PSN title enough to motivate you to try this mobile game?

    Review: Infamous: First Light

    Developer: Sucker Punch Publisher: SCEA Platform: PS4 Release Date: August 26, 2014 ESRB: T for Teen Drugs, dealers, death, and destruction. Infamous: First Light, the first standalone DLC for Infamous: Second Son, is a dark prequel that builds a strong backstory not only for the neon-powered Fetch but the city of Seattle itself. As players learned in Second Son, Abigail "Fetch" Walker, ran away from home at a young age with her brother Brent as her parents were handing her over to the Department of Unified Protection. Infamous: First Light finds Fetch stuck in the conduit prison Curdun Cay relaying the story of her and her brother's struggles two years previous to DUP director Brooke Augustine. During the course of the interrogation, the game bounces back and forth between Fetch reliving her past in Seattle and fighting through Augustine's trials at Curdun Cay. While in Seattle, Fetch and Brent find themselves taking shady work from unsavory people to make money and stay off the grid. When one of the deals goes bad, Fetch is forced to reveal her powers and things get complicated. She continues to complete tasks with murky moral boundaries to rescue her brother, captured during the botched mission at the game's opening. Sucker Punch delivered a moving narrative of how the combination of drug addiction and uncontrollable power engulf Fetch and create the character Delsin meets later in Second Son. The Emerald City of First Light is much different than that of Second Son. These streets are free of DUP checkpoints, cops are fighting the Akuran gangs, and sightings of conduits are non-existent. However, as Fetch begins to reveal her powers, the city evolves. The DUP presence slowly ramps up while the police and Akurans find a common enemy in the conduit who has invaded their city. It quickly becomes clear how a DUP-controlled Seattle came to be and why the city's residents may have accepted it. From a visual standpoint, Seattle is as gorgeous as ever. Second Son's initial section featuring the Space Needle is completely playable with new side missions filling each city district. The PS4 flexes it's muscles once more creating beautiful environments and impressive lighting effects. This is, of course, perfect for an open-world game whose protagonist wields neon light as a weapon. First Light's flashy combat is quick and accurate. The neon power is more than just dazzling to look at when you begin to consider the vessel it resides in. Fetch's struggle with drug addiction melds with her flamboyant power to encapsulate the emotional roller coaster she rides throughout the story. While the combat lacks the diversity Delsin enjoyed in Second Son, it is enough to keep players interested. Skill points unlocked by completing side missions in the game allow techniques to be unlocked and upgraded similar to other entries in the Infamous franchise. Side missions return in the form of lumen gas races, police camera dismantling and laser graffiti quests. While they are a bit meatier than those of Second Son, they are fewer in number. The motion-controlled laser graffiti missions handled particularly clunky compared to the similar spray paint missions of Second Son. All and all, if you didn't enjoy the side missions playing as Delsin, you probably won't enjoy these either. The battle arena of Curdun Cay, First Light's primary feature addition, was masterfully introduced into Fetch's story. Here Augustine pushes Fetch to let her emotional guard down and unleash her full potential as a conduit. Fighting through waves of digital projections presents a challenge and makes up for the lack of major battles in the story. Once the main narrative is completed, the arenas can be replayed in Survival or Rescue modes. As you may have guessed, Survival consists of defeating waves of DUP agents while Rescue involves saving citizens also while fighting off the DUP. Additionally, If the Second Son game save still exists on your PS4, Delsin becomes playable in the arenas. Second Son's photo mode is also present in First Light. A genius marketing move by Sony and Sucker Punch, photo mode perpetuates the socially connected mantra even in this, a single player game. It allows gamers to share jaw-dropping screenshots unique to their experience via Twitter, Facebook or really any social media platform. In fact, all of the screens displayed in this review were taken during my personal playthrough. Infamous: First Light builds a compelling narrative for how the Fetch and Seattle of Infamous: Second Son came to be. The depressing prequel story she tells is moving. As a protagonist, Fetch evokes more emotion than Delsin did, ironically, without the use of forced moral decision-making. While side missions again fall short, the battle arenas add hours of additional gameplay. Sucker Punch once again delivers the high-quality presentation and combat fans have come to expect.     Until Dawn Trademarked Once More By Sony

    It looks as though Sony is breathing life into their abandoned PS3 title, Until Dawn. Last week, Sony Computer Entertainment re-filed the game's trademark which they had previously let expire. The original trademark read simply, "Computer game software; video game software," but the new one is more detailed and references more than just the game itself. First it states, "Downloadable computer graphics; Downloadable images in the field of adventure and horror entertainment." So clearly Sony is sticking with the original Cabin in the Woods horror premise but may now be targeting a PSN exclusive release. In addition, the trademark references posters, providing consumer information and a website. This type of marketing seems like overkill for a downloadable-only title which could suggest a number of things. Sony could use them as hype building tools for an official reveal at either Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show or they could be used to market the game alongside Project Morpheus. Until Dawn could make for an interesting addition to a Project Morpheus bundle, no? Regardless, it looks as though Sony is prepping some kind of re-reveal. If you remember. Sony filed trademarks for Entwined and Bloodbourne in the months leading up to E3 so it's entirely possible that we could see Until Dawn very soon.   15. During Sony's E3 conference, Adam Boyes alluded to exclusive Destiny content coming to Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. Yesterday, Sid Shuman revealed on the Playstation Blog just what that content would consist of. In addition to the Alpha offered this past weekend and a few early days in the Beta, Bungie will be giving PS4 and PS3 owners exclusive access to a co-op Strike mission, a competitive multiplayer map, guns, armor and ships. The Co-op mission entitled, Dust Strike Palace, has three players fighting though an abandoned skyscraper on Mars against the Psion Flayers. The multiplayer map takes place aboard mid-sized ship called the Exodus Blue and is best suited for Control and Skirmish game modes. There will also be an exclusive assault rifle, handgun, armor set for each class and three ships. All of this content will be available when the game launches September 9.   16. [uPDATE] Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare is coming to Playstation 4 and Playstation 3. Popcap Games announced today that their popular title would debut on PS4 and PS3 August 19 in the US and August 21 in Europe. It will be packaged with the DLC packs, Garden Variety and Zomboss Down. [Original Story] Electronic Arts tweeted a number of images today mashing Plants vs. Zombies with various Playstation franchises including Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper and Fat Princess. Many believe the images are teasing an announcement of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare for Playstation 3, 4 and possibly Vita. All the pictures feature the same quote, "Shooters just got weird." A version of Plants vs. Zombies with a Playstation twist could be an interesting idea as well. Only time will tell however as to what the official announcement is actually for.   17. Mojang announced on Thursday that Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita versions of their uberly popular video game Minecraft will be coming this August. They also provided details on pricing, features and compatibility. The Xbox One and Playstation 4 Editions of Minecraft will be available for $19.99 but you can upgrade from the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions for $4.99. To do so on Xbox One you will need to have either bought the game through the Xbox Live Marketplace or signed in online using the disc-based version. At this time only PS3 owners who bought the game via the Playstation Network will be able to take advantage of the upgrade option. Mojang is working with Sony on a way for blu-ray owners to upgrade but there is not a solution yet. Xbox One and PS4 owners will be available to take advantage of this option for one year after release. Players will be able to import their Xbox 360 saves to Xbox One and PS3/Vita saves to PS4. However, they will not be able to transfer them in the opposite direction. Cross-platform play will not be possible. Most previously purchased DLC will be available for use in the upgraded versions. The Playstation Vita Edition will be a bit different. It will feature cross-buy and cross-save. This means that the Vita version will be free for owners of the PS3 version and PS3/Vita saves will be transferable. Again, Mojang is working with Sony on a way for blu-ray owners to unlock the Vita copy of the game. If you do not yet own Minecraft on PS3, it will cost you $19.99.   18. Swedish developer Tarsier Studios recently announced that they are working on a new project for the Playstation 4 titled Hunger. It is described as a third person action adventure with an emphasis on stealth and exploration. Hunger follows a kidnapped 9-year-old girl named Six. Trapped in an underwater resort called The Maw, she must find a way to escape. Her journey through The Maw examines the "corrupt heart of modern happiness." According to the developer's blog, development of the game was made possible by funding from the Nordic Game Program. CEO Ola Homdahl said, “The grant enables us to explore an idea we are deeply passionate about. Hunger holds fantastic potential, and our job now is to harness that promise into a great experience.” The game will be downloadable but a release date has not yet been announced.   19. Today, Poria Torkan, producer on Killzone: Shadow Fall and Killzone: Mercenary, announced new downloadable content coming to Shadow Fall this June. The online cooperative mode titled Intercept tasks a four player team of VSA special forces to go into Helghast territory and obtain enemy communications. Infiltration is just the beginning as players then have to transmit the communications back to the VSA while fighting off waves of Helghast soldiers. There are four character classes to choose from: Assault, Marksman, Medic or Tactician. Each has a special skill set allowing for different tactical options. Torkan pointed out that enemy strategy would evolve during the course of the battle, throwing different tactics at the co-op squad. He added that, "the enemy can call on special Helghast champions with unique abilities, based on key characters from the Shadow Fall single-player campaign. Expect to go up against some very familiar faces…" In addition to featuring four "arena" style maps the DLC brings a perk system allowing players to call in missile strikes, use jet packs, among other bonuses. The Intercept expansion will be available for free to season pass holders this June and everyone else sometime later this year. Pricing details were not disclosed for the standalone version.     First Footage of SOE's Zombie MMO H1Z1

    The first teaser for the zombie MMO H1Z1 was released this week by Sony Online Entertainment. By entering the Konami Code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A) on the game's official website, the footage became unlocked. The trailer titled "Will You Survive The Night" features a player navigating through a cemetery with stereotypical zombie grunting in the distance. It is clear that traveling at night will be a challenge as it appears zombies will notice the use of a light source. Unfortunately, there is no combat so it is uncertain how easy it will be to fight off any attacking undead. H1Z1 will be coming to Playstation 4 and PC though a release date has yet to be announced.   23. Ever since the reveal of the PlayStation 4 we have been bursting with questions about the system. Although some have been answered, there are always more popping up. Today posted a video answering 10 fairly popular questions about the system. In case you can't watch the video yourself, or just don't care to spend the time, here are some of the facts that weren't already common knowledge. PS4 will have party chat and that won't be restricted to paying accounts. This is of course one feature that PS3 owners have been begging for and never received. Friends lists will also see a jump from 100 users to 2,000. Why you would need that many friends is unclear but the option is there. We already knew that the PS4 will require a fee to play online games, but not all of them. Free to play titles can be accessed by all players. The same is true of services such as Netflix, thankfully. F2P games are free primarily because of their various in-game transactions. The rest of the detail focuses on things many of us already know such as the ability to switch the hard drive out in PS4 or that PS3 controllers don't work on the system.   24. After the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S. we are back on track for PlayStation Plus updates. As today is Tuesday that means the latest set of PS Plus additions will go live on PSN soon. What's there to check out this week? Well, we're seeing the debut of timed trials among other things. First, the new Instant Game Collection title is BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend for Vita. This version improved upon console renditions by including story modes for characters that had previously been DLC, as well as tweaking the online multiplayer. Timed trials have been introduced to allow PS Plus members the opportunity to check out exciting new titles without being forced into weird "demo" snippets. The two games with timed trials are Fuse and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Although this is no doubt very beneficial for PS Plus subscribers, it is odd that they are not open to all PSN users. Game sales running this week are as follows: Draw Slasher - $4.19 Germinator - $5.99 Hamilton's Great Adventure - $2.50 Finally, Sleeping Dogs is about to be removed from the Instant Game Collection less than a month after being inducted. Members should probably come to expect that most "big name" games will see similar treatment in the future so be sure to download them in a timely fashion!
