Jason Clement posted a topic in TV, Movie, Blu-RayIf you missed the news last week, Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) was yanked as writer and director of Star Wars Episode IX. Rumors say that it was because he was difficult to work with and was a dictator on set. Anyhoo, there was also word that Rian Johnson (currently the director of Episode VIII) would take over and direct one more movie, but today Lucasfilm made it official that JJ Abrams will be taking the reins for one last time. J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm. “With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. My first thought upon seeing this was, "Oh, well I guess that makes sense." I mean, ideally Johnson would have been the best pick since the movie is picking up from where he left off, but reports say that he didn't want to do another one, likely because it's a herculean effort and he probably would want some time to rest (which, production has to start right away, pretty much). I think Abrams is a pretty solid pick; The Force Awakens was pretty good, but now we'll get to see if that was a fluke or if Abrams is the real deal and can deliver a Star Wars film that doesn't adhere to the same formula as a past movie in the franchise. What do you guys think of Abrams being the new director for Episode IX?
