For the long while now Blizzard has been hyping up their Real Money Auction House (RMAH) for Diablo III. Since launch up until now though this feature has been unavailable. Sure, there is currently an Auction House in place but it's free of all that pesky actual money. It's been delayed a couple times but is finally approaching launch.

Obviously, the flow of actual money in the RMAH poses a significant security risk. Because of this, Blizzard is tightening up security for those who will wish to use the system. Simply being connected to their servers whenever you play isn't enough!

Here's the newly updated Terms of Service statement for those who wish to use Battle.Net Balance (a digital wallet for Battle.Net purchases):

"Starting today, in order to add to your Battle.net Balance, players will be required to have a Battle.net Authenticator or Battle.net Mobile Authenticator attached to their Battle.net account. For clarity, this means you’ll need to have an Authenticator to add to your balance via Battle.net Account Management or to send the proceeds of your real-money auction house sales to your Battle.net Balance."

If you want a physical Authenticator specifically then be ready to spend some money. Those keychain versions cost a little under $7. Thankfully there are also Mobile Authenticators which are free apps for iOS and Android smartphones. This is sure to annoy Diablo III players who don't already have an Authenticator or a smartphone though.
