Nintendo held their first Nintendo Direct presentation of 2012 this morning, sharing some details on upcoming games in the next month or two, and they shared at least one big announcement - The Last Story will be licensed to XSEED for exclusive publishing rights in North America.

This comes as a huge victory to fans who've been waiting to see if the highly anticipated game would be announced over here after being released in Japan and announced in Europe and Australia. The game's director, Hironobu Sakaguchi, had this to say regarding the North American localization announcement:

“I am very happy to be able to confirm that The Last Story will be released in North America. XSEED Games has a reputation for bringing high-quality JRPGs to America, and I’m sure they will do a great job with this release too.”

According to the press release, "The Last Story follows Zael and his band of fellow adventurers as they go to Lazulis Island, the only region prospering as the mainland of the Empire slowly rots away, in search of work and a better future. After securing employment with the ruler of the island, Count Arganan, Zael dreams of finally achieving a secure life as a knight and putting his unstable mercenary past behind him, but things don’t exactly go to plan when events during their first mission change his life forever."

The Last Story will be released sometime in Summer 2012, and XSEED will be announcing more updates on the game in the coming months.

I'm still amazed by NoA's resistance with this whole situation. I wonder how much the license cost XSEED.

That's so friggin' awesome, not just the game's announcement (that would be selling it short due to me whining all the time but...), but when I buy it I can hand my money over to a publisher I'm quite fond of as of late. Not feel a ping of guilt because some publishing division of NoA FINALLY decided to allow it to happen, Nope, just XSEED, and they are cool people.

Now only one thing remains. XSEED, why can't I pre-order the game yet? I want to give you my money now. Don't you understand how these things work when you hype me up?

Something tells me much less than you'd expect, XSEED is a pretty small publisher and I doubt they went too crazy at all.

I can see them letting it go for a fraction of what it should, mainly because there was no desire by Nintendo to publish this (and other games) for North America... but I can also see them holding it hostage, in a way.
