In one of the more surprising pieces of news today, Blizzard has laid off approximately 600 members of its staff, though a good 90% of them were not involved in game development.
Blizzard issued a statement reassuring that the World of Warcraft development team was not affected and that the layoffs would not impact their development nor their publishing schedules.
CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say regarding the layoffs:
"As Blizzard and the industry have evolved we've also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company. Knowing that, it still does not make letting go of some of our team members any easier."
Given that most of those laid off were not part of development, one has to wonder who exactly Blizzard let go. Part of the legal staff? The food staff? Personal masseuses and daycare providers?
Regardless, Game Podunk wishes the best for the 600 who were laid off and hope they find new employment soon.

They laid off the people that had to take turns pushing the big red "Server Reset" button. They found that training monkeys to do the job was much cheaper, as they only have to pay in bananas!
In all seriousness, that's pretty unfortunate news, that's a lot of people that might struggle to find work now, with the current state of our economy. Hopefully, they will be able to get back on their feet and/or had back up plans.
