The latest rumor out there claims that the next Xbox will eliminate discs entirely. If Microsoft makes this dumb move, they can forget about me buying a system. I like collecting games and displaying them. I also hate buying digital games that you can never trade, sell or lend out. Some rumors are hard to believe, but this one seems very plausible to me especially considering the industry's desire to put an end to used game sales.
Everyone loved DLC and downloadable games in the beginning, but I sort of always knew it would eventually be a very bad thing. If gamers don't start raising issues about it soon, they will continue to go farther and farther with download only content. I think once every system goes to digital only downloads, I'm just going to stick with the old systems and consider myself retired from modern gaming.

I think many companies want to make the jump to digital. It cuts out costs of manufacturing and having to sell through stores that they don't control. However, our internet infrastructure is nowhere near good enough to allow this to be the case yet. However, if every game is available digital day one alongside many physical releases I see no problem there. It's like what the Vita is doing now which is the best of both worlds. Get your game in which media format that you like/are able to acquire.

If they are cheaper than retail games are currently I wouldn't really mind.
It would have to be a lot cheaper in my opinion. Digital games should really be 1/2 the price of physical games in my opinion. But that will never be the case. Once they get rid of discs altogether, prices will skyrocket I bet.

Seconding Jared's comment. I check around a lot of gaming forums and am always amazed by the younger gamer generation not understanding that NOT EVERYONE has a speedy and/or reliable internet connection. Just because your lovely little suburban house does doesn't mean the entire world is just like you, or even that all of America is like that. There's tons of areas within the states that are lacking any decent connectivity, or if there is it's expensive as can be. Then you look to other places and there's bandwidth caps which basically would destroy your ability to grab more than a handful of games monthly.

The bandwidth cap was my immediate thought too. IF people are able to have a high-speed internet connection, then you run into the issue of bandwidth limits. This is of course another problem on top of people not even having access to high speed internet, or being able to afford it, or whatever the case is.
I will be shocked if the no-disc thing is actually put into place. You can play most any old computer game on a newer computer, yet you don't necessarily have the same capabilities with older console games and newer consoles. If the no-disc drive thing goes through, digital games remain as expensive as physical ones, and the market for used games is crushed by the lack of any new physical games and/or by console restrictions preventing the use of used games, I think I will have to seriously consider my "loyalty" to consoles, specifically to Xbox. All this talk is seriously making me consider other options.

That said, I can't really see how that would work well due to space limitations.

Maybe not half the price, but $40 to $45 wouldn't be bad. Most of the people that can't afford/don't have access to a decent internet connection probably won't be buying a lot of new games anyway. I'm not saying that to insult people, I personally live in a crappy apartment in a run down urban area. I don't have a lot of cash myself and have to search for deals online. I just think that is how Microsoft would see things, and they will try to appeal to the people with money. It would have to be a lot cheaper in my opinion. But if the market is only digital copy now, what is there out there to make MS or Sony or whoever is making these game price competitively? Personally, I think maybe while they are switching to disc only the prices could be reduced but if everyone goes digital and they all agree to put it at a certain price, we are all stuck there like it or not.
