  2. Ever since the Atari VCS was announced earlier this year, the console has been shrouded in secrecy. Is it a retro-centric console (ala the NES Classic)? Or is it actually going to compete with the likes of Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch? The truth is a combination of the two, it turns out. Atari has announced a few details about the console ahead of its pre-sale, which is slated to kick off late next month. The company has teamed up with AMD to provide the Atari VCS with a custom processor that uses Radeon Graphics Technology. Some other features listed include: Support for 4K resolution HDR and 60FPS content Onboard and expandable storage options Dual-band WiFi Bluetooth 5.0 USB 3.0 support If you're wondering what the Atari VCS' full product specs are, the company seems to be keeping a tight lid on it for now but has said that they will be posted with the pre-sale when it goes live. As for the console itself, Atari is calling it "retro-inspired" but not a "retro box." Rather it's slated to be a fully customizable entertainment experience, giving you access to a wide variety of games as well as media and streaming content. The VCS also includes an Atari Vault with over 100 classic games (such as Centipede, Asteroids, and Breakout among many others); a full list of which will be released at a later date and compatible with a new, updated classic controller as well as a modern controller designed specifically for the console. The Indiegogo-exclusive pre-sale starts on May 30 and features a time-limited Atari VCS collector's edition sporting a retro-inspired wood front (like the original Atari 2600 had). Atari is also offering an early-bird Onyx version (sleek black) for $199 as well as other packages that include the modern and classic controllers. Initial Atari VCS shipments are being planned for Spring 2019, so it won't be too much longer before we finally find out if it's worth the wait.   3. Microsoft dug up more than just an old urban legend out in that New Mexico desert. Back in April of this year, Microsoft funded an expedition into the desolate New Mexico wastelands to search for the long fabled trove of E.T the Extra Terrestrial cartridges buried in an ancient landfill in the hopes that it would help advertise an Atari documentary that the company had in the works. Their expedition was a success, but reports coming out of the electronics giant have revealed that the cost was far greater than they could have ever imagined as it becomes more and more clear that the curse placed on the crypt of Atari games was as real as the trove itself. The ancient curse had first manifested itself as an ominous warning to the archeologists the moment they had broken through the concrete that sealed the games and curse in their endless prison. Gamers are advised not to open Xbox One boxes if they are hissing. The long, shrill scream that was heard was written off as "the wind" at the time as the crew continued excavating until they had undeniable proof of the treasure trove that had lay beneath them resting in their hands. Now, two months after the fact and a startlingly large rash of disappearances over such a short period, Microsoft is finally admitting that their company just might have a problem with the supernatural. While different members of the board have admitted poltergeist type activities going on, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella continues to dismiss the curse as a bunch of hokey pokey and the many disappearances as nothing more than coincidence, he has had a much tougher time explaining why so many Xbox One consoles have transformed into bundles of snakes and locusts, or why such ominous clouds have been hanging over the Microsoft headquarters seemingly suspended in space, unmoving despite how windy this last month has been. How the curse might effect Microsoft's E3 presentation or investors is still unknown, but journalists and game designers have been advised by the tech giant to bring any luck charms and protection spells they might have into the conference hall with them, and to know where the exits are at all times.

It looks like Lightbox Interactive (developer behind Starhawk) is working with a marketing agency to unearth the E.T. game cartridges that Atari buried so long ago. Not sure what they stand to gain from this other than it possibly being a stunt for publicity (seeing as how a marketing agency is involved). I think Marcus said he has it in his collection somewhere, but did anyone ever play the E.T. Atari game?
  5. Everyone knows about the infamously bad Atari 2600 game E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and how millions of the cartridges were supposedly buried in an Alamogardo, New Mexico landfill. Its commercial failure is even claimed to be a contributing factor in the video game industry crash of 1983. Well, after 30 years of being in the cold, hard ground, all those cartridges will be dug up and finally see the light of day again. Film production company, Fuel, has been allowed by Alamogardo's City Commission to access the landfill for six months and create a documentary on the excavation. Alamogardo's mayor, Susie Galea, hopes this will bring attention to the town. What do you think about the infamous E.T. cartridges being dug up after 30 years? Do you believe that there are even cartridges buried?
  6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is infamous to gamers. This Atari 2600 atrocity was programmed in five short weeks to prepare for the holiday shopping season and was unanimously hated upon release. Spurned families returned the games, leading to one of gaming's juiciest legends. Supposedly, many of the carts were buried in a landfill due to excess, unsellable stock. One fan who goes by the name "recompile" enjoys E.T. They enjoy the game so much that they studied the game and its code and have fixed it. Well, at least, as much so as is possible without actually changing entire aspects of the game to make it fun. There were definitely real bugs in the game though which have been remedied. Changes to the game include collision detection for the holes in the ground. Originally, having any piece of E.T. overlap with a hole would result in the alien falling in. This has been changed to make it react the way we expect, where E.T.'s feet must be over the hole to fall down. His color was also changed to reflect the film's actual skin tone. An extra mode was even added in for fans to experiment with. These updates and more are detailed in depth on Neocomputer.   9. Here's something you don't see every day. Tempest was a popular game that hit arcades in 1980. After, Atari attempted to capture the game for home releases on its Atari 2600 and 5200 systems. However, both versions never managed to be completed and make it out to consumers. For a long time, that was all that anyone knew of the scrapped projects. It was in 1999 that a prototype of game surfaced and was quickly bought by a collector. The prototype code has since proliferated through the Atari community, but the game was still incomplete. More recently, the game's original programmer, Keithen Hayenga, was made aware of the community's interest in the game. He decided to finish the game and now, after around 30 years, Tempest for the Atari 5200 is a finished product. The finished game code has been brought to AtariAge and from there they have produced a cart, box, and manual. Those who want an obscure piece of Atari history now simply have to put down $50 for a copy. Compared to other reproductions this price is actually pretty fair. Those at all interested in the eventual collectability should order soon though, as only the first 250 copies come with the box and manual. Orders after that will only be for a Tempest cart.

    Atari, Inc. Files for Bankruptcy

    Over the past few years, Atari has been having some serious money troubles. Even after releasing an updated version of their classic video game Pong and a "greatest hits" compilation of their biggest arcade titles to date, Atari's revenue has been groundrocketing - with the 2012 fiscal year seeing a 34% loss and the 2011 fiscal year seeing a 43% loss. Their yearly profits haven't been very good either, with the company having only earned $11 million in 2012 and $4 million in 2011. And it's due to their financial struggle that Atari S.A.'s U.S. subsidiary, Atari, Inc., has just filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York late Sunday, according to the L.A. Times.The company, as well as three of its affiliates, filed petitions for Chapter 11 reorganization in an effort to break free from the shackles of debt their French parent company has acquired. The company's intention, so says a source close to the L.A. Times, is to go on after the bankruptcy goes through, hopefully reemerging with its own resources and with little of the debt of its parent company, to find a buyer who will take the company private and grow as a business that focuses more on digital and mobile platforms. One big reason for Atari taking a big financial hit is thanks to London financial company BlueBay Asset Management, which they relied heavily on for money. After a $28-million credit facility with BlueBay lapsed on Dec. 31, Atari was left without the resources to release games they were working on. And with all that happening, along with shares in Atari S.A. dropping in value from more than 11 Euros in 2008 to less than 1 Euro, it was only a matter of time before the child companies tried breaking away.

  12. Recently, something really cool happened in the Atari collecting world. Someone found a near mint and complete in box (CIB) copy of the game Air Raid. Why is this at all important? Well, there are only under 20 copies known to exist... It's definitely a super rarity for the Atari 2600. In 2010, a boxed copy sold for $30,000 and now someone has found an even better copy! I think it's pretty cool, although it makes me sad to think that modern games will probably never come out in such a limited quantity. The closest I could think of are limited physical releases of indie games, but even then those at least hit 100 copies. In comparison to other systems, NES games have sold for more, but this is definitely the most expensive 2600 game. Anyway, the Air Raid auction is currently at $17k and it has a neat story attached as well. Do you think people are completely crazy to pay that much for a simple game?
  13. The new Super Slim Playstation 3 model has finally hit store shelves and I've just been dying to talk about it. The pricing of the system, the size of the included hard drive, what this means for the Wii-U, and of course the actual design of the system itself will all be points of interest for me today. I must admit I was confused by a lot of the decisions Sony chose to make when it came to this new Playstation's reveal, but after a few days of trying to piece everything together I think I might have finally worked out whatever shenanigans Sony is trying to pull. About That Price This is what really caught me by surprise when the new Playstation 3 was announced. Everyone was so sure that the price would be dropped that we all just assumed it was going to happen one way or the other. Instead, what we received were larger hard drives and a game bundled in every new system. Remember when Sony used to do price drops? Good times. Sony says the reason they didn't drop the price is because people prefer bundle deals more than they prefer saving money as evidenced by special Black Friday sales and different giftcards randomly being bundled with the console during other such sales. I personally think this is a terrible idea, but I think I know why they did it. Sure, a price drop or a cheaper Playstation 3 model would have given Sony a nice boost over the next month or so, but there is something you have to take into account - the Wii U doesn't release for a few more months. Sony would only be shooting themselves in the foot if they pulled out the big guns so soon. So why release the console now, you might ask? Its simple actually. At least it is in my head. Let's hope things work out when I write it down. Building Up To The Fight With The Wii-U Like I said a few dozen words ago, the next generation doesn't start for a few more months. But Sony can't just throw out a new system type with a lower price point a week before the Wii U releases. There simply wouldn't be enough time to hype it up properly. Instead they released it months in advance at the normal price. Eye of the Tiger, Sony! Eye of the Tiger! I think there is actually a reason to this. Now people have upwards of two months to get used to seeing the new Playstation model on store shelves at the $250 price point. They'll accept that price as normal and people will, of course, buy it at that price. Then when the Wii U launches, they can drop a cheaper model with a smaller hard drive onto the market. It certainly won't be enough to put a dent into the Wii U's launch, but it would steal some of Nintendo's thunder while also allowing Sony to make a few bucks with the increased price a few months before. Its essentially the same thing Nintendo did with the 3DS. Changing The Console's Look (Again) The new system has been revealed to the public for a while so I'm sure you've all seen it by now. If you haven't, then I suggest you scroll back up on this article and look at the images that have been posted above. I'm not sure if you noticed, but the new PS3 looks kind of like a PS2. That's not a bad thing, of course; it can't hurt to try and connect your most popular console with your newest one. Odds are people will buy it just because of the resemblance (and before you call baloney, you should remember people spend money all the time without actually considering their purchase). Don't try to fight me on this one. I love the idea too much. But I think Sony is missing a golden opportunity here. What's big and hip right now with the people that have plenty of money to blow on gadgets? The answer is retro stuff. I don't know why but if you make a DS look like a NES you can get an extra hundred bucks out of it. Obviously Sony can't start selling Playstations made to look like Super Nintendos, but the weird grid design found on the new PS3 still reminds me of a dark time in the 70's and 80's. The era of wood paneling. Pretty much every electronic back then had the same line pattern this new PS3 has along with a hunk of fake wood. Slap a few of those wood panels on the new PS3 and just sit back and laugh as the retro money pours in. They could even base their price drop around it by way of reverse inflation. $250 today would be worth around $170 back in the 1980's. Slap a retro price tag on it and things would be totally groovy. For some reason when I read this all back to myself I'm imagining that it looks a lot like the plot of one of the Rocky movies. Weird robot and all. But in all seriousness I do believe Sony has a plan of attack ready for the Wii U. Odds are it won't be what i wrote up, but it could be close. As always, thank you for reading.

    "This non-functional prototype is the only one of it's kind. Many of the Sesame Street titles released for the 2600 were also planned for the 5200 but were never released. Rumors of prototype 5200 Sesame Street games surface from time to time but none have been confirmed as of yet."
